another thing I was wondering (again from viewing the 5D2 threads). There's some weird (I dunno if it's artifacts or what) that seems to show up a lot on obviously processed photos. Although it's not like HRD processed. Which makes me wonder how it holds up to serious processing.

I'm only asking because before we decided to sell off all the canon stuff, I checked out moving back to canon and buying the 5D2. But since I couldn't tell if the oof stuff was an actual issue or people who don't know how to use 1.2-2 on a ff & the weird look after processing.

There was a post that had a couple test photos from 5D classic and 7D comparing ISO 800 and 3200. The 5D photos was BETTER than 7D in terms of detail and noise.

https://photography-on-the.net …p?p=8560045&postcount=166

really? wow.

(I always said the 5D was worth every penny of it's existence...it's amazing how it's still holding up to current tech.)

I am pretty sure the oof photos I shot when I borrowed a 5D2 + 85 mm f/1.2L was my OWN fault.

But when I hit focus rigth I think the photos were pretty good.

they definitely are! Beautiful.

Someone I know has one and the IQ on his shots have been amazing. Someone else I sort of know not so much. I know they are both capable photogs though. Which made me wonder.

In any case, we decided to stick with the nikon. But I have to say that there was a definite draw to the 5D2.

and lol! I've missed you gear heads.

My life has been so busy that I'm not even catching up on tpbm anymore. Mostly just jumping in to say hello. But every time I come over here it's computers or trains (no offense to either...they're fine, just aren't my thing) so I don't really have anything to contribute.

I love my 5D2. Really want a mark III though for the autofocus for when I am doing more action related shots.

I am Henry. NOT Hank. And certainly not a length of rope tied in a knot. ;)

I've found Bay Area gas prices to be higher than just about anywehre else in California. California is just about the highest in the country.

Congratulations.

Have you purchased gas down here recently? We're pretty high too.

Sounds exciting to me. The last time I went "Foaming" was probably 10 years ago. I had some 3megapixel Olympus something or other, and we were looking for the last of the "bloody noses" (Southern Pacific Gray and Scarlet). The "Banannas" (newly appointed Union Pacific number) really contrasted with the weather beaten SP colors.

I didn't know what a "bloody nose" was until Tom and Wool explained it to me...

Woolburr wrote in post #8570520 (external link)
There is a quantity of "bloody noses" in El Paso, TX....some are ex-SP, some are ex-Cotton Belt and some are from a leasing concern. The paint jobs are growing old and there are an alarming number of panels that have been replaced that are painted in UP yeller. I think I could spend a couple days in EP and turn up a dozen or more.

I saw a Cotton Belt "bloody nose" somewhere on my drive back from Arizona last week. I just don't remember where. :(

have you guys already seen RG's report on the 7D?

The built in level is a sweet feature.

The 7D has a turn-and-bank indicator?

Unless they didn't want to really $&%* off all those who bought a 5DII and decided to keep the sensor cropped for now....maybe they will wind down production of the xxDs....

I really think that's what's going to happen...

Woolburr wrote in post #8571163 (external link)
It does look like a nice camera...just wish they would can the video crap...I'm sure there is a niche market for it...but putting video on a DSLR makes no sense at all to me. Kind of like putting a microwave in your blender. Both are handy...but don't really seem suited to be a pair.

I agree, and at the same time ditch the pop-up flash for good...

Woolburr wrote in post #8571199 (external link)
Actually...I like the 1.3x crop...but it doesn't really matter to me...I look through the viewfinder of whatever camera I use and go from there. What you see is what you get and all that.

That^

Lisa, it's interesting that you have gotten that impression about 5D2 shots. I'd had the impression that it was the best in the Canon lineup for low noise.

I do enjoy my 5D Classic, though:). And I am not surprised that the 7D doesn't beat it in low noise/high ISO performance. It is a beautiful piece of work!

I really liked the M3 for noise handling, it was one of my favorite things about it. And again, I've had no hands on experience at all with the 5D2 Tony. It's just something I've noticed on the threads that I've visited. It could totally be the lack of experience of the photographer.

It could be that underexposed and pushed thing. Hard to say. But like you say, the 1D3 and of course the 5D Classic are treasures. Both are always close at hand:)!

You guys think it would be smart at all to pick me up a 1D3? I think it would still be eons above the 7D when it is finally released.

Side note. I effing hate the forums when people get hyped up about something that will not even be purchasable for a long while... >.<

The 1D3 is one of those great combinations of superior IQ and high performance, and I doubt if tons of 1D3 users are wanting to jump ship to the 7D, but you might wait to see more real results from the 7D. When you are shooting little critters that 18 MP might come in handy, as long as you have the good glass and technique.

I haven't read yet if they've finished the re-calls on the M3 (is the AF finally stabilized)? My only issue with it was that it refused to track whites well (which is a hindrance to a wedding photog). The ds2 was eons ahead in AF tracking. (that's just my opinion and it's true that they've had 2 or 3 recalls on the AF since I sold mine).
