Hi Dan / Chris...what happening down south today?

Well, for once I am NOT post processing anything

As my sig says, "pretty basic gear" - I'm finally thinking about upgrading my 3+ year old Rebel XT (I have one of the first models). Much as I'd like the new 5D Mark II, I simply can't spend $2700 - plus I really need to get myself a nice lens (I'm using crap at the present time).

So I'm toying with buying one of the 50D kits (Adorama has several). My pain threshold is somewhere around $2000, but I'm not sure what lens to get. I'll bet that question has never been asked on POTN before

Any thoughts from the peanut gallery?

50D and 28-135 IS is a decent combo.

I love my 50D. It's a very nice body. I actually prefer it to my work 5D (the old one). I have had a few paying gigs and have saved enough for the 5DII but just haven't been able to justify the expense, at least not for my personal camera.

BTW, Beach camera and B&H have the 50D with the 28/135 for $1249.

That is part of the appeal. You won't find a lens that good for that price anywhere else. Avoid the gear forums though...you will find nothing but a bunch of asshats trying to compare the 28-135 to a 24-70 L or the 24-105 L....it is neither....but dollar for dollar...it is an excellent bang for the buck lens. If you do get one....I will just share this caution with you....I have never seen a lens that hated filters more than this one....flare, ghosting and just plain soft images result from adding a filter to it. Get a lens hood and life is fine.
