I wonder if that guy actually owns that 100K lens?

The credits at the end indicate that B&H owns the lens...

Interesting stuff...would love to see some additional work with it.

B&H is having way too much fun with that lens.

I'm beginning to think they want to hang onto it for a while longer ;)

It occurs to me that the lens is actually incredible marketing collateral. Lend the lens to a privileged few, who will drool all over it, and say "It came from B&H".

"I'm not sure if I'm ever going to complain about carrying my 500 again" -- haha! That's a good one, I can relate!

The 300 is a thing of beauty, but yeah, it's the first of the "heavies". I sadly had to sell mine a few months ago, but it gave me thousands of good images.

Sorry to hear that... the 300's performance is flawless. I rented one a while ago, but the weight drove me away from it. If I had a compelling reason to use it, and I regularly shot with it, I figure I could get used to the weight, but I don't actually do enough tele shooting to justify it. The 24-105 is the lens I use so often I fear it will actually wear out.

In the meantime I rely on the 100-400, which has the zoom advantage.

my 300 2.8 (oh okaaaaay, now Jon's) was really the coolest lens I've ever used. SO fast focusing. Incredibly sharp too but really the focus speed was amazing on the M3. But so stinking heavy. Sometimes I miss it...then I just carry around my current heavy gear and remember that I only used the 300 2.8 about 4 or 5x in a year. Just because it was so heavy for me.

My fear is that if I buy one it will end up like that. I was shooting skydivers handheld with the 300 and actually managed to pull something in my shoulder.

The 400 DO IS also looks good, but too many complaints about its optical quality scare me. For that price I need it to be perfect. The 1-4 is perfect: it's just that it's not as fast, aperture-wise.....

I hear ya. The last time I used mine, we were in the car (using it as a bird blind) I'd been shooting for a while and saw some bird and tried to lift up the camera/lens combo again and was shaking so much that Dan reached over and lifted it up for me. I didn't realize what a hard time I was having with it til then.

Well, the 300 taught me to use a monopod, because I needed to, and it taught me to use teleconverters, because I needed to and really could. It's the only lens that I've been happy to use a 2x TC with.

Oh, and the IS -- how sweet to get a shot with a 2x TC, 600mm, snap into focus!

Fun times -- shooting with this lens out of the car window with the 2x TC, wrangling for the right angle and balance, got me shots like these:

oh nice Tony.

This is probably my favorite shot with the 300

or this one

the first was handheld and the second with a monopod (which is how I almost always used it)
