Nothing wrong with using a pod....dang to hear some people talk it is criminal if you do...but if you want sharp images...you use one. Hell...I can handhold a 70-200 f/2.8 IS all day long without batting an eye...but the images that come from it when used with a pod are on a whole different level.

Yup....you folks shoot birds on the move.....

I shoot birds on the plate, my preferred rig being 28/1.8, 30D, ST-E2 and an off-camera flash :p

(some will remember my infamous 'plate shot'....)

It seems to be a gear forum requirement of manly prowess that one be able to handhold without any form of support :p

Tying some bricks to the tripod mount enhances your 'street cred' apparently :p

Sweet, Lisa! I now shoot with the 100-400 with a 1.4x TC, but something's not quite the same...but the next Big lens I get will have to be either a 500 or 600 because, well, you know birding...but it may be a long time coming.

1-4 with TC ain't that hot. The big guns take TC's a lot better.. hopefully there is a long lens in your future soon :)

I'm using a 300 F4 with a 1.4x tc now. It's pretty equivalent to my 300 F4 IS. (minus the IS) but IQ wise very similar.

Hell, yeah -- I don't know of anyone who is serious about birding who doesn't use one at least occasionally, but I may be wrong. With me and the 300, though, especially with a TC, well, it was just assumed that if a tripod wasn't convenient a monopod was at least alongside. I've done some real treks with the 300/body on a monopod slung over my shoulder.

You recall at one time I had a 300/4 ISL and 1-4 in the house simultaneously..

The 1-4 turned out to be even a little bit sharper than the 300/4 with TC (both racked all the way out), and just as sharp at 300 without TC. But I kinda miss the clean lines, look and feel of the 300. I love the hood and the thinner barrel of the lens.

Yeah...you should be able to do a day with the 400 f/2.8 IS and then pump off an evenings worth with the 500 without batting an eyelash. ;)

Absolutely! And don't forget your 1-series, the bigger, the better. Be old skewl, use NiMH for added weight. For after all, weight equals stability!

Me? I use pods when I have a chance. 300/2.8 IS on a tripod was nice, even if I didn't have a gimbal.

Heh! My 1D3 was a nice match for the 300 -- it wasn't "little":)!

You really don't need a gimbal for the 300, IMO. I think it's made to be an in-between type of lens that you can hand hold (I've done it plenty) and you can get a ton of mileage with a monopod, which I think I've done the most of, and you can get a lot of mileage with a good conventional tripod, which I've done plenty of -- come to think of it, I don't even have a gimbal, so I guess I don't even know what I'm talking about!
