You have to watch some of the deals though....this looks good...

Again, more great feedback - and super thanks for the links Dan.

Yeah, I've seen that double lens combo on Adorama (about the same price), and it's pretty tempting. I feel like someone who has been driving a 4 cylinder Chevette for the last 3 years, but I've gotten remarkable mileage out out of the XT (maybe 30k photos?).

It might sound funny, but I almost feel a little scared buying a camera (and lenses) that have so many features. I have to look at it as learning opportunity I guess :)

I also have to start figuring out how much I can sell the XT for. I won't sell it online here (I don't have a PayPal account), but will probably sell it locally to a friend.

If your shooting with a XT now, the learning curve will be very short indeed. Everything you know now is applicable to the 50Das well. Some things are much easier to do than on the XT and adjustment much quicker. You won't have a problem.

Yup, good deals going on right now. You don't fancy saving up that little bit more and going for a 5DII?

Good news: I'm finally going from hourly to permanent salary after four and a half years working here.
Bad news: Next month is going to suck because I'll be in that pay period transition where I get pretty much no paycheck for the whole month. D'OH!

Thanks, that's good to know. The button layout looks quite different, and having a second LCD (info) display on top will be interesting as well.

Just out of curiosity, do many people use the "Live View" feature? I'm so used to using the view finder, that I couldn't imagine using it for much.

Thanks again for all the great advice guys!

I never really used live view much, and can't now, but that's a different story entirely. The display on top is very useful, you'll like it. There really won't be much to get used to, the interface is very easy to work with despite the button layout being different. You'll soon find yourself wondering how you ever worked with the Rebel. :p

Moooorning mooooo. Thanks for the feedback on the lighting setups. Nice Bikini shots Claire.

Planning to become crafty today. Going to a store to buy some Neoprene for some bags for some of the RRS kit. Don't want it banging about in the bag getting scratched and dented.

I had to look up a SX110IS:o.

Testing out some lighting setups this morning.

No.1 Diffused 580EX Regular Flash, I used a Lumiquest Softbox III and had the flash mounted to the lens mount. Not a perfect setup yet as I don't have enough vertical movement to point the flash down, but this offers a lot of promise as it will be the biggest light source.

No.2 This one with a Really Right Stuff B87-B bracket and the MT-24 Twin light. Been saving for this for a while and hope to be able to diffuse the macro light better when mounted on this bracket. Moving the heads of the twin light away from the end of the lens is slightly counter productive as the light source get smaller this way. But, I can then vary their position better and also add different diffusers. Some of the smaller Lumiquest diffusers will now fit also.

It's a pain that there is not a lot about in the garden ATM. Good news is that my Mandarin tree has just started to sprout after my major hack and cut job about 6wks ago.

Pretty flower pictures.

Very true. I've been so busy for the last week and a half that I haven't been able to get the camera out. I manage to stay caught up in here, but I have not idea what's going on in the other thread.

So I'm toying with buying one of the 50D kits (Adorama has several). My pain threshold is somewhere around $2000, but I'm not sure what lens to get. I'll bet that question has never been asked on POTN before :D

Any thoughts from the peanut gallery?

The 17-55 f/2.8 IS is a nice lens. With a 50D you're looking at about $2200, though...
