I stopped reading when I got to the video part.

I can't believe they did that... If Canon keeps on in the direction my next camera just might be a Nikon.

I did some sleuthing one time and found that most of the really chronic Measurebators have posted damn little excpet for focus charts, battery tests and 100% crops.

Yeah, and no gallery links in their sigs...

I guess it just falls under the "Live and Let ****" banner Dan...

Honestly, before I joined POTN, I'd never even heard of such activities in any other hobby/professional arena.

I guess they exsist among Musicians, Audiophiles, Videophiles, Motorcycles, Cars, etc but even the most anal broadcast engineers I've worked with don't sweat the minutea like it gets sweated here.

In the interest of not being "That Guy", I offer this thread where we have some nice work being posted.

I agree, although I saw it to some extent over on Fred Miranda.

That's a great thread but the guy in the sunglasses in post #3 is a bit scary. I'm not sure I'd want him as my pilot... ;)

For those that bent Canon to their will over the 5DMkII video firmware release...

Classic!

40D bashing going on too. Nothing wrong with the 40D apart from the LCD. If they could simply upgrade the LCD on mine, that's all I need.

Funny how the bashers have ranted on and on about the most irrelevant features including MA, and not one has mentioned the most obvious - the LCD.

I really don't find anything wrong with the LCD on my 40D. It serves it's purpose for me.

That is a pretty sicko camera.

Every time an emo kid takes a self pic of themselves with a DSLR, a 400/2.8 ISL gets its front element cracked.

Lordy! What next?

Sounds like you're a litle upset with Americans today. Allow me to apologize on behalf of my countrymen for 60hz and 110 Volts. I wasn't around when those decisions were made. If I had been, I would most certainly had insisted they consult with you first. As for NTSC, I might have just been asleep at the switch there. Mea culpa.

I don't think the example of your 'ten million bucks of gear at work' is necessarily valid. You're not talking about a consumer-level product. My attitude has been that it is a bit presumptuous of people to go back to a manufacturer after the fact and 'demand' the addition of new features that were never intended to be included in the product. I thought it was silly when petitions were being circulated about mirror lockup on the original DRebel, and my attitude has not significantly shifted since then.

In the case of the 1D3, the clamor by owners for Canon to correct the focusing issues was legitimate. This was a product with inherent defects that caused it to not perform as advertised, and I think Canon had no choice but to deal with them (even though I still believe a lot of the 'bad' units were perfectly fine).

I have no issues with people asking Canon for firmware upgrades to the 5D2. I think, however, the requests were presented as demands in a large number of cases, and those are the people that I (and Jay, I suspect) have issues with. The self-congratulatory smugness of the people who feel they 'forced' Canon to bend to their will is a little off-putting, and I fear this sort of thinking is only going to get worse in the future.

Someday, I won't be surprised if DSLR manufacturers deliberately leave out features, and at some future date sell the firmware uprgrades to unlock them. It's expensive to bring out totally new hardware every year or two, so if they can give the public new features with just a firmware tweak, and why not? (especially if they can make money doing it) It would almost be a Microsoft business model.

Then, you'll really have something to complain about.

I've believed for several that development of new cameras is already several years ahead of what's currently on the market. I'd be willing to bet the 1Ds MkIV has already been develoiped and is just waiting for an opportune release date and Canon is currently working on the MkV and MkVI versions of the cameras.

Belmondo wrote in post #8857308 (external link)
You're personalizing something that wasn't directed at you in particular. I think you know that.

It is unfortunate that we don't have more worldwide standards, but there is really nothing we can do about it.

ISO 9000 was supposed to be step in that direction, but it doesn't seem to have done anything profound.

Morning guys.

Good to see The Chief and Yoda sparring, but with no blood drawn. From my perspective, I'd love to the US go metric. We are we so far behind the curve on that.

I've felt this way for quite a while. I hated having to buy two sets of tools, one to work on my metric vehicles at home and another to put together the US system airplanes at work.

Woolburr wrote in post #8858220 (external link)

As for the metric system....they can take that crap back where it came from. It is simply a measurement tool that is no better or worse than the current system. People that say that it is based on better science are just trying to justify it. Our current system has units of measurement that are as clearly defined and equally as accurate as metric. The argument that our system is bad because it was based on the length of a segment of a king's finger is totally irrelevant. What the system was originally based on or not is immaterial. The inch exists...it matters not what it was based on, as I can still measure and quantify things using the system, even if it were based on a stack of goose feathers.

Believe it or not...a 13mm wrench does not fit on a 13mm bolt any better than a 1/2 inch wrench fits on a 1/2 inch bolt. If people want American products, then they will have to put up with our standards, the same as we have to endure their standards should we desire goods manufactured by them.
[/soapbox]:lol::lol::lol:

No offense Dan, but your argument comes across as arrogant and elitist. ;-)a What a particular system is based on is a specious argument at best and I agree with that point. However, if we are going to compete globally, we need to embrace what the rest of the world uses. The United State is the last major economy in the world that doesn't use the metric system. US manufacturers, like Boeing, want to sell overseas, but how do foreign airlines feel when they have to buy complete new sets of tools because the ones they have don't work? "Screw that crap, I'm going to buy Airbus instead."

Very quiet out here in the desert today. Our little spate of Indian Summer seems to have come and gone and temps are back in the mid '80s where they belong.

the 1d4 looks awesome.

There's an interesting video up on SmugMug shot with the 1D4. I'm not crazy about the story (which ends 2/3rd of the way through - the rest is credits), but it's neat to see some of the visuals. It's all shot at ISO 6400, with no special lighting.

Personally I can't imagine you'd get any different results with the 7D or 5DM2.

I wish we could keep some of them.

As pretty as our severe clear blue skies are, from a purely photographic standpoint, they get a bit boring after a while. Having said that, from a peace of mind standpoint, I'll take it over not seeing the sun for six months as was the case during Michigan winters. :(

I will trade our 18% gray skies for a 100% blue sky any day of the week. :)

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Not to go Cliff Claven on you but:

Your average Blue Sky has an exposure value very nearly the same as an 18% grey card...

In fact, that's what I meter off of when I go shoot aircraft in flight. Blue Sky, Down Sun at about a 45 degree angle up. ;)

So see? You aren't missing much...

they do, but Yoda isn't in Japan....

I realize that. I am just saying it isn't just the U.S. :). Of course the only reason they use it is because of the United States' influence there post WWII
