Not to go Cliff Claven on you but:

Your average Blue Sky has an exposure value very nearly the same as an 18% grey card...

In fact, that's what I meter off of when I go shoot aircraft in flight. Blue Sky, Down Sun at about a 45 degree angle up. ;)

So see? You aren't missing much...

Well, it in the quality of the 18% then. :)

I realize that. I am just saying it isn't just the U.S. :). Of course the only reason they use it is because of the United States' influence there post WWII

Except it's not quite the same NTSC...

Japan runs (ran) an IRE scale of 0 to 100 while the US ran 7.5 to 100 so black levels between the two were always different.

It wasn't until the US went 601 that we expanded our IRE to full scale.

FWIW, having worked with some PAL 601 gear, I'll take that standard any day. Unpack it, plug it in, hose it up and use it. Hardly any muss nor fuss to it.

I'm amazed at the number of people acting like they are ready to jump on the MkIV bandwagon less than 24 hours after the announcement.

Personally I think it's another example of how Canon's marketing department drives the development of their cameras. The last thing I need in a camera is a 100,000 ISO and video. I rarely use the 3200 my 40D is capable of and if I wanted to shoot video, I'd go buy a video camera.

There were a lot of people shooting video at the Miramar air show a couple of weeks ago and there was only one 5DII in the lot. It was in the hands of someone's guest and not a media person. I just don't think the demand for video in a DSLR is high enough to warrant the number of cameras it's being put into, at least at the pro level.

Another area where marketing is foremost is the emasculation of Canon's full frame cameras so they can continue to market two different cameras (1D and 1Ds) when Nikon has proven you can have it all in one body (the D3.)

The average still photographer will never see where the 7D, the 5DMkII and (presumably) the 1DMkIV are being used to the fullest extent of thier video capabilities. For every one body that goes to a legacy still photographer, probably 10 or more are going to non-traditional uses.

I really can't stress this strongly enough...

Getting native 1080p + Canon Glass at these kinds of price points (especially the 7D) is so beyond the pale of what was available just six months ago that it nearly defies description. In some applications, we're talking about a cost reduction on the order of probably a TENTH the cost prior to the release of the 5DMkII et al...with really no loss in quality and a considerable gain in low-light ability.

Yeah its as if everybody has forgotten all the mess with 1DM3. I migth get it eventually but definately not the first year.

Speaking of the new 1D4, Someone said this

I have been reading the specs since I had a chance to shoot a pre prod without any cards. I had no idea what the specs are.

I find that this is a complete camera.

NEW AF that actually works. 39 cross type f2.8 points. Ai servo II

And I wonder how it is possible to verify the focus and say it actually works when the images is not recorded to a card ?

I've been shooting a 1D4 since early September...no cards, but I can tell you that the video is beyond awesome....did two music videos for emerging local talent and if I had had a way to actually capture what I shot, I suspect it would have been award winning stuff at the next MTV honors.

As far as AF....it is just beyond belief. It locks on to focus test charts like nobody's business. Lightning quick and razor sharp....now to just get a model that actually lets me capture this action...well, well....I'll just show you!

I'm on Canon's list of pre-testers. I was given a card to test without a camera.

So far, I am truly impressed.

I'm told I'll be testing the neck strap on the Mk V

That's a slick move...

Reminds me of this one (external link) by Mike Legg of Michigan in '96.

Personal Connection: My BIL was the videotape operator on the receiving end of this shot so he claims total responsability for it being available today!
