I'm hearing that Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 is one of the
best software packages available to work on your photos once
you get them out of the camera?

True?

Is there any comparable software out there that
should be considered for this?

I attempted one of those threads as well. Sadly, found out that everyone just jumps on the bandwagon and uses Lightroom though.

Maybe that means that Lightroom is the preferred software by many people. Kinda answers the question, I think. If you search the hundreds of "which software should I use" threads here, you'll see LR recommended often. I don't think that's just because everybody is "jumping on the bandwagon".

To the OP - it depends on what kind of processing you're planning on doing. If you're planning on cloning people into different backgrounds and adding all kinds of wild/surreal effects, something like Photoshop or the GIMP would be a good choice. If you want to efficiently catalogue/keyword/manage your images and do basic post-processing, Lightroom works very well. Some prefer Aperture, some simply use Adobe Bridge or DPP. There is no one best application for everybody, and each has a learning curve associated with them.

Many of the software packages offer a free 30-day trial download from their websites. Best thing to do is d/l them and give each a try to see what works best for you.

They offer a free 30-day trial of LR2, try it! I didn't try it for a long time because I was pretty happy with PS CS4 but now I wish I had tried it sooner.

DPP does the bet job at converting RAW files (at least with a 50D), but that being said, I use LR2. The interface and work flow is great!
