What do you think of this? Finally another choice in this area.Haven't seen a price yet,but it should be fairly reasonable since it doesn't have Is.
Reminds me a lot of the Tamron 24-135 that came out ages ago,and was a pretty good lens.
Its definately one to check out I think, what do you think ?

At that range it will likely be a variable aperature lens. And without IS it makes it of limited use to anyone but the consumer market. If they could make it a f/2.8 it would be very interesting.

If they made it an f/2.8 it would also weigh as much as a house. 16.5mm to 135 and f/2.8? That's a HUGE lens. The 17-55 IS is already a big lens, and it's not very long...more than double the range would not be doable in a compact lens. You'd be looking at something likely as big or bigger than the 24-70 f/2.8, and that's not what this lens is intended for. This lens is intended to be a lightweight all in one travel lens. I haven't seen any reviews yet, but I've always liked Tokinas...you get L class build in a much less expensive package.

Looks to me to be a new version of their old 24-200 and that was a very good lens for its time and type. Would be a nice one lens solution

I thought this lens would be out in stores by now, I remember posting about the ridiculous high price..still I'd like to see user reviews/pics soon. Been wanting to get a 24-105 L, but I'd love the much wider angle of 16.5mm

If Tokina ever gets around to working on USM motors... Canon better look out. If they add IS to the mix too, oh boy.

I want one just for the sheer fun of saying that I have a lens that goes as wide as 16.5mm.

That is WAY too much if that ends up being accurate. The Sigma 18-125 OS is only $300. For $500 get the Tamron with 2x the reach and also IS. I think $250-300 is reasonable. For $570, it would have to optically superb beyond any other slow zoom.

My guess is that it will come down in price after a couple of months of introduction

I think is expensive, yes, but my guess (hope) according to the little info I have read is that this is a more refined consumer lens oriented towards a more "demanding" user.

What I hope is that the the IQ of this lens should be much better than the standard consumer walk around lens in a much more compact package.

Tokina is known for their quality products and durable materials, so I think you'll get your moneys worth.
Thats why I look forward to the reviews,
By contrast the reviews of the Sigma 18-125 OS are not that spectacular, they all say things like "great for the money, good walk around value with OS"

So we will see what is the true deal with this Tokina
I think could be an interesting lens made by a very reputable company.

One other thing is that 16.5mm is a good bit wider than 18mm, and so you get a bit more of an all in one, rather than perhaps feeling the need for an ultra-wide as well. 15mm would have been even better, though.
