I remember a letter to the editor a couple years back that really turned me off some rescue groups. A mom wanted to adopt, but had two boys around 12. I believe it was from a Humane society shelter. They denied the adoption saying there was too much potential for boys that age to be abusive even though they had not met them. It was an automatic no. The person writing, and myself, were outraged that the shelter rather kill dogs than put them in a home that had young boys. I guess I can understand if the dogs personality is bitey or that they don't like kids. This struck me like over emotional animal nuts that rather kill animals than risk them not having a text book dream life with an old lady feeding them steak. No Peke experience + small kids, it's not worth the risk to the dogs, or to us. If we let them adopt, and the dog bites the child under extreme aggravation:
It's a no-win for both the rescue group and the dog. If a rescue group is operating a government shelter under contract, they've got even less flexibility than we, as an independent group, do, since the county/city has their own rules. We can actually consider if the household already has one or more Pekes or similar temperament dogs, or has recent experience with them. But "Ooooh, we want to adopt one because they're so cuuuute!" when you have toddlers to 1st grade kids and no idea what you're getting into is a killer. If you have little kids and no dog experience, - look for a nice, goofy Lab or similar dog that's 5 or more years old, so safely past the puppy energy levels. Better for both the kids and the dog.
