I'm sure you guys are all tired of seeing the new guy try it, but here is my attempt.

I actually ended up taking 145 images f/22 @ 1/125 - ISO 400 - 600mm (300 x 2) on a 1Ds Mark II. I was trying to do one of the colorized moon shots that got me interested, but after futzing around with Registax 5 for most of the night and early this morning I haven't been able to get anything out of it.

Here is the plain old output from a single image. Still 5 days away from the full moon, but we're going to have a percentage of cloud and rain coverage in the next couple of days so took the oppurtunity to do it.

I have to ask, why at f22? f8 would have been perfectly fine.

It's more to reduce light pollution than DoF concerns.

Although I'm on only about 40 miles from the edge of farm land out here on Long Island there is a lot of lights, cars, street lamps, even my own house lights. You can even see some of the glow from New York City.

Looks good. But a moon in this phase can easily be taken at ISO 100-200 and f/6 to 8 would work well. I understand the concern about light pollution but since the moon is such a bright object, exposing for the best data quality as a prority will give you the best information possible for adjusting the file in PS. Now if you were shooting long exposure deep sky images that would be altogether different. Light pollution is a killer for that.

Also, the color tone of your image suggests it was taken while the moon was fairly low in the sky. If so, try shooting it when it's closer to zenith or at least a good 45 degrees up from the horizon. This will help greatly with clarity/focus.

Although I've done every other type of photography I've never done celestial - great notes, thank you.
