i have been inspired to do some creative stuff lately.. not naming members here but you know who you are - and thanks pete for the lighting suggestions.

i haven't done one of these ever.. so here is my first poster -
being i love lighting, i wanted to try to do the popular Twilight series.. i don't think i got it exactly right.. and my post processing is different from the original, but i think it turned out ok.. different but still similar and satisfying.

i wanted this challenge to see what i am capable of..

second version is slightly hotter

IMAGE: http://i44.tinypic.com/30u3449.jpg

Cast - thanks goes out to my friends and senior to be high schools who were my models.

Cody - the main vampire -
bio - Singing Hoosiers, IU Auditorium Usher Corps, Union Board Design and Performing Arts, Various Independent Theatre Projects

Tori - the main female character
bio - cheerleading, gymnastics, Track, & Dance

Jordan - camera right - "happiness is like a butterfly
when pursed its beyond your reach
if you sit quietly it flutters apond you"

Landon - male camera left - Sports, Karate, Music, Reading ""Some people don't believe in love at first sight, but when I saw you all my doubts vanished. Every man will try to capture your heart, but let me be the one to take it away""

Issa - female camera left - "My favorite sport/hobby is people-watching"
bio - Singing hoosiers -

photographer - phamster

i used 4 lights on this shoot.

1 alien bee - beauty dish as main - set to about 1/4 power with sock - triggered by alzo trigger
1 430 ex II - side kicker lighting - alzo soft box set to 1/2 power - triggered by alzo trigger
1 580 ex II - side kicker other side - alzo soft box set to 1/4 power - triggered by alzo trigger
1 550 ex - pocket wizard triggered - for the back rim lighting - set to 1/4 power

and some behind the scene taken by one of the models -

the eyes....although probably intended, seem quite white. I like the background visuals in #1 better. I think it adds more realism to the effect that they are out there in the dark woods.
Nice work......nice lighting set up!

Two things which I think could take this photo to the next level.

1. Overlap the actors in PS.
2. Soften them with a plastic filter or something similar.

Otherwise, amazing job.

Not sure if we are allowed to post this here; please let me know if i need to take it down.

Nice job Pham. Both of them are absolutely great, although I like the first one better -- just personal preference in it having some more depth.

Very nice. I prefer some aspects of your version over the original.

As another poster suggested, overlap them with the poses. In the original poster, the light is a little softer as well. If you want to really go for the Twilight "look", makeup would help.

There are a few things different here.

From the looks of it, the models in the original were all shot independently one at a time. Except the main two. It's classic rembrandt style lighting with a crosslight for some rim. If you notice the girl on the far lefts face is a tad hotter than the girl on the far right, which should be closer to the main light. They really makes me think they were shot separately.

The other things look to be a pretty heavy skin smooth and process on everyone, even the gritty males. Then a heavy handed does of dodge and burn to bring out the curves of the faces.

In your version. The girl on the far right is the best lit. She actually has some of her face in deep shadow. You just sidlit everyone and used the front light to open up their faces a bit. You have lots of hotspots but no deep shadows. The drama is in the shadows, not the hotspots.

The girl on the right you nailed it, looks fantastic. The horror film lighting does no favors for the girl in the middle and the girl on the far left is kind of a mess.

Gear- Why do you care? If my image is good it's good, if it sucks it sucks. It's most likely my own fault.

These are awesome man... I think you did a great job.. I agree with puttimg them overlapping eachother and I think for the final result they are way too oversharpenned... perhaps youve used the highpassfilter? the final look on the original is much more natural... dont be afraid of surfaceblur, well used and in different layers but before you do selective sharpening.
