Advice on Printing

I am looking for advice on how to start, a local bar is interesting in showing some of my work and I wanted to print some very good 16 X 20 shots.

I have a local shop that will do the prints for me.

I guess my question is I need to reprocess the files, all the retouches and what not are on JPG. the originals are on raw.

Should I go back to Raw and do the retouches and put them on large tiff files?

Any tricks or tips in regards to resolution that I should know? Any books or how to sites that anyone can recommend is greatly appreciated.

16x20 should be fine converted to JPEG @ full res and 300dpi. Granted you are working with 5+mp in the RAW format.

If you have the RAW files exported to .jpg with now downsizing from the original (just processed and converted) then it shouldn't be a problem. I'd ask the shop to print one for testing and then go ahead if it looks fine.

What kind of circumstance do I really want to print from a tiff file.

You really don't; it doesn't matter in terms of quality and its just a Pain in the rear to work with.

I've never heard of people printing from TIFF. Mostly .jpg on srgb or rgb @ 300dpi.

When I print at WHCC I just do my editing in RAW, then export to .jpg with no sizing constraints (just convert) and then send in. At 14mp I could print up to 30x30 prolly ok.

Again, if you downsized your TIFF or RAW files on conversion to .jpg then you might have problems. . . just make sure your pictures are printable for the size you want before printing

I use light room and export my files from raw to jpg. I use color space sRGB, 100 Quality and resolution at 750 pixels per inch. Is that enough to print up to 30 X30?

That's because there is no image quality loss in saving or editing uncompressed TIFF files. Probably keeps more accurate color data when converting to cmyk anyway which is the format printer companies normally print from.

JPEG always loses a little bit each time.

I print through WHCC and am satisfied with the .jpg, and srgb. It does compress it a little but by the time it's done there's not much difference IMO.
