This weekend I tried for the first time triggering strobes at a wedding optically . The results - 100% effective deterrent for P&S shooters. During the first couple of group shots some looked aside - probably at somebody else's camera, But guests with their P&S very quickly realized that it was not going to work as their flash would trigger a 1000 WS total blast of light causing their pictures be completely white and put their cameras away. After 10 photos or so all my subjects looked solely at my lens !
