Can I manually pop-up the on board flash, and use in the AV mode ,if so,do i need to make any extra settings on the 40D?

ID like to use this settings when doing some close-up of flowers
I rarely use flash ,but in this case thought it might be helpful

I went through the manual ,but I'm a still not sure?

Any help would be appreciated

Yes you can... you'll probably want to set some negative FEC, though. The pop up, especially up close, does not flatter a subject.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

Bohank,thanks for your reply.

Is this something that you use yourself?and,
Is there a optimum aperture that you recommend?
Most of the time I try to use F8,as this is the sweet spot on my lens
As I stated before ,rarely use flash...so???

The popup is not particularly strong, but I would think at macro distances would be sufficient to get fill. When using flash outdoors in Av mode, the camera will automatically determine how much flash power is appropriate just for "fill" of a darkish/shadowy subject. As bohdank mentioned, take one shot and look at the result - then adjust flash exposure compensation wither up or down to increase or decrease the amount of fill the camera added.

Be sure that the exposure determined for the ambient light in Av involves a shutter speed of 1/250 or slower. This is because there is a safety override feature that as soon as you raise the flash will reduce the shutter speed to 1/250, the maximum sync speed. If the ambient light level required a faster speed, the result will be overexposure. So adjust the f/stop or the ISO to keep the ss down or use Tv.
