Not 1:1, but as 'close-up' as my 17-55 will allow me.

C&C appreciated! Also, 1) and 2) are the same shot - I can't decide which I like better - what do you guys think?

Discovered what the species was - Dendrobium crumenatum. Apparently very common where I live :)

Lovely shots of a very pretty orchid.

I like #2 in preference to #1 purely because the crop has increased the detail showing on the end bloom. In #1 the other flowers are just a little too out of focus to make it the nicer shot of the 2.

I actually have a question.

Under what circumstances did you get these shots? I'm like, supreme newbie so bear with my ridiculous questions. I love the contrast between the black background and the white flowers.

You need greater depth of field. The out of focus bits are very distracting. Use a reflector to fill in the shadows. Warm up the images a bit.

Thank you, Cyclop and MizzGrizz. I found out the species is Dendrobium crumenatum.

Thank you Linda, I do agree - I was surprised at how much detail there was in this close crop (I think it is close to 85% of full size).

Thanks Barb42, I appreciate your advice. I wanted to try focus-stacking, but these were all hand-held and I have very shaky hands. Planning on getting a tripod - but don't have that yet, or even a reflector.

Thanks!
I hand-held my flash unit off-camera, connected to my camera with a flash shoe cord (OC-E3). With flash, shooting at highest shutter speed (1/250) and at f16. I think that's what kills the background - I didn't use any background sheets or anything.

:) Yeah that little guy was cute. Wish I still had my 100 macro, would've taken more shots of him.
