OK, I need some help finding a backpack that does what I want it to do. No offense to the users of any of the more traditional packs out there, but I've tried front and rear entry packs and HATE them.

"Front" Entry:

IMAGE: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/images/multiple_images/item_images/IMG_1381.jpg
my issue here is you have to lay the pack down to get anything out. You also have to put the side that touches your back in the mud if there is anything. Plus it's vulnerable to people opening it on you if you worry about those sorts of things, but also, it leaves the nagging though of "did I zip it all the way?" in the back of my head (I've had a similar designed pack, non photo, open on me and drop a camera)... But the other key, is there's no way to get anything out of a bag like this w/o taking it off AND setting it down...

"Rear/Back" Entry:
IMAGE: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/images/multiple_images/item_images/IMG_33439.jpg

IMAGE: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/images/multiple_images/item_images/IMG_63342.jpg

while these are a huge improvement in my eye over front entry, you still have to remove them and set them down to get anything out. All other issues go away, but that last issue is a pretty big one IMHO....

"side/sling" entry:
IMAGE: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/images/multiple_images/item_images/IMG_63335.jpg

this is what I have now (although I have a kata 3n1-30). It solves all my issues with taking the bag off, but isn't w/o it's own issues. My biggest being you have to have the longest lens on the body whenever it's in the bag... So you have the 100-400 on the body, but need to shoot with the 16-35 that's in one of the side cubbies... OK:

  • sling the bag
  • open the bag
  • remove the camera w/long lens
  • grab small lens
  • swap lenses holding the bag, body and 2 lenses mid air (or set down which is something I'd like to avoid)
  • put the long lens in the bag
  • shoot with the short lens
  • swap lenses back
  • put camera back
  • back to backpack mode....

my issue is in the constant need to swap the long lens on/off most of the time I use the bag.

Here's what I really want, I want a bag that's similar in layout to a "3 tube shoulder bag". I want 3 "tubes" that the camera/lens can be put in at any time so I don't have to keep swapping lenses out unless the shot requires it. I also want SIDE ACCESS to the bag. I'd prefer the bag to only be "thick" enough for a DSLR w/o grip (5D/40D) NOT gripped or 1 series, but I doubt that's possible with it being big enough for a 100-400... I'd LOVE for it to be a "convertible" bag where it works as a shoulder bag with the opening at the top OR a backpack with the same opening on the side. Basically, I want this, but as a photo bag:
IMAGE: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ol-images/la/uploads/103007_patagonia1.jpg

and maybe slightly smaller... (that's a patagonia MLC which converts from a shoulder bag to backpack, but it's bigger than I need)

Lowepro Primus or Primus Minimus both have side entry. The bag is set up with rear entry, but has a zippered opening on the wearers right-hand side for access to the photo gear compartment.

Oh, and if you want it to be on the 'smaller' side, go for the Minimus:) Both will fit a camera body with 70-200/2.8IS attached.

thanks for the heads up... I'm a lefty, but I suppose if it's the only option I could learn?

OK:

same issue as the other side entries though (just like the kata I have)... You have to keep the longest lens on the body whenever it's in the bag... I need the other lens compartments to also open towards the side zipper and all be open so the camera can slide into any of the 3 with any lens on it.

thanks though.

I couldn't find anything and had the same problem as you. I had a Fastpack 200 and would have to put it on the ground to change lenses...etc.

I bought a Lowepro ProMag 2. Yes it is a shoulder bag but it does have a waist belt that helps distribute the load. I can swing it around to the front, open the bag and have instant access to all my lenses.

^ yeah, I'm leaning that way... I have a few issues though. My primary use right now is to ride my bike with... So a shoulder bag isn't ideal as it needs to stay behind me? I'm seriously considering getting a giant handlebar basket though and just using my current shoulder bags.

but secondary is for hiking w/o wanting to set anything down. Quick CLEAN access in messy places. This would also suit me for skiing.

But that's why I'd love a convertible option. So I can use it both ways.

The Flipside is about the only thing out there, I think.

right, but it still doesn't have the "3 tubes" I'm looking for or am I missing something?

IMAGE: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/images/multiple_images/item_images/IMG_63339.jpg

this could work:
IMAGE: http://media.rei.com/media/hh/2b84f2a9-4305-45f2-a45d-80777183fc27.jpg
but I'm worried about the bumps/rattling? I could take it easy on the one dirt section I ride, but I can't skip it as that's the access to the better shooting.

OK, I just ordered this:

I figure for $25 shipped I can't go too wrong (cheapest insert option). Plus it'll mean I can use any of the ~5+ riding backpacks I already own. My DIY messenger bag works very well as well, so this is basically a better insert to do the same thing with a backpack. I'll update with a new DIY backpack thread once it arrives (either tomorrow or thursday).

I have the Tenba insert you've mentioned. It might be a tight fit in your backpack(horizontally), depending which bags you use. If you could deal with the Patagonia bag's size, this insert would be perfect(vertically).

It fits perfectly in messengers though.

that's the thing though, I want it to be "vertical" in the backpack (so the lenses are across my back, the opening on my left side)... So I'm thinking it'll work perfectly provided I find the right backpack for it. I've already got ~2 DaKines, 1 Burton, 1 cirqueworks and a few other less technical bags to try it in, so I'm sure it'll work in something for now.

this is the first pack I'll be trying it in:

IMAGE: http://www.evogear.com/imgp/320/1497.Image.1.jpg
which is 19x11x4... Yeah the 4 is a little tight considering the insert is supposedly 13x9x5, but since all the other sizes are slightly bigger I'm hoping it's work out. All my other bags are bigger and I know it'll work in them, they're just too big and have tons of extra straps and crap I don't need...

Plus, I've been wanting one of these:

which seems like it was custom built for the tenba insert. :D

The Manhattan Portage bags are nice. If you have a dealer around you, try it on. I didn't find them as comfortable as some other bags, but they do the job.

Another bag to consider is the Timbuk2 small Classic Messenger bags. The Tenba literally fits in like a glove. Might be a little snug, but the two were almost made for each other. I got the medium sized one for my lowepro insert and the bag is comfy. They come with a "cross strap"(which is removable) which helps keep the bag from sliding side-to-side.

soooo true - but in the city, since they're everywhere - they're pretty stealth :)

Surprisingly, I can carry my 5D2 with 70-200/2.8IS mounted, 24-70, and 16-35 in it and it's really comfortable.
