On the 15th June our daughter presented my wife and I with our first grandchild,,Jake Matthew..

Jake came in at 3.6 kilos, 49cm long.. Both mum and child are well,,dad is totally besotted!!

Just to be a wee bit technical for a moment, have you considered applying a mask to the second pic and sharpening up his eyes a little?

I can't see the EXIF today to see which lens you used (on the office PC) but at that distance the DoF is so thin that I can see why you said what a challenge it was.

How did you manage the lighting?

Tamron 18-50mm F/2.8.. 20D/800 ISO.. The first image was shot at F/4.5 the second at F/2.8.. I used natural light coming through two windows facing north west and north (Southern Hemisphere)..

My intention was to keep the DoF as shallow as possible..
