What would be a better lens to have. As a general all around. I shoot studio to street. Thanks in advance.

**edit I have the 17-40 but I have been considering selling it for the 24-105. **

They are two completely different lenses for two completely different purposes. It's like asking what is better, a Corvette or a pickup truck.

Edit---after seeing your edit, only you can decide if the 17-40 focal length is useful to you. The 24-105 will be similar to your 28-135 in focal length, with perhaps better sharpness, colors, focus, etc. But it really makes no sense to compare the 17-40 to the 24-105 directly.

The 17-40 distorts less than the 24-105 at similar focal lengths. Also, 24mm on a crop isn't that wide. IMO, the 24-105 is more suited to FF.

I've had both and I've just sold my 24-105 because I never used it, first on the crop camera it did not fit my needs, and on my 5D the distortion was too much. Love my 17-40. But then again I loved my 10-22. So if it where me with your gear, I would buy the 10-22 :) I like to shoot wide. Depends on what you like.

What crop camera were you using? What didn't you like about it on the crop? Thanks

i have 16-35(similar to 17-40) & 24-105... i cant find a reason to dispatch either since the 16-35 is my best gun for landscape & wacky portraits and the 24-105 for general purpose & normal portraits. btw, im using FF cam.

hth... ;)

I used it on my 400D and the 40D, I started with 10-22, 24-105 and 70-300DO. The lens I used most of these were 10-22. Have in mind that this was right in my beginning of DSLR. I tried to use 24-105 indoors, but it was always to long for me. I found myself changing lenses all the time, If I could turn back time I would have bought 17-55 2.8 Is. But as I thought this was too expensive I got me a Tamron 17-50 f2.8. This lens was the perfect walk-around lens for me, I used it outdoors and indoors, portraits and group shots. Almost never off the camera.

Would think that 24-105 would feel the same on my 5D, but it did not. Seems that I'm either wide or long :) Now I have 17-40 on 5D and 70-200 on my 40D and I have the possibility to swap body/lens combination.
