UPS just dropped this off a few hours ago, so I hope to put it to work this weekend.

I'll let you know how it goes!

FWIW, my first impression of the build quality is very positive. This lens may be expensive, but it's built VERY well--much better than the previous TS-E lenses.

Wow! Congrats!

Do let us know indeed, please...

Kind regards, Wim

Sorry if I'm off topic here but
I received my TS-E 17mm today.
Could those that have it tell me if it came with a lens hood?
I've got a lens cap and pouch but no hood on a brand new factory lens that
Canon's website says includes a lens hood.
Thanks,

Mac

That's a mistake on Canon's website (Canon USA?). It does not come with a hood. The only one that would fit and not vignet at maximum shift and tilt would be a more or less circular flat piece of plastic, so fairly useless.

Kind regards, Wim

Thank You Wim,
Yes, Canon USA.
I thought it may not come with one since every review site and pictures I've
seen don't show it with a hood.
I've seen a hood with the TS-E 24 II though.
Thanks again for the quick response.

Read the Manual again and found a small footnote stating there is no lens hood
available for the 17mm.
I'm off to my local camera shop to purchase a quality lens cleaning kit.
I will post pictures soon.

I just got my TS-E 24mm "1" this Tuesday and I was looking at the 17 ... until I saw the price! It'll wait but it sure looks like a nice TiltShift lens!!!!

Looking forward to seeing pics from them, though please don't try talking me into getting on just yet ... let me learn my 24mm first! ;)

Have fun!

Congrats !.

Waiting (patiently) for your PICs. Especially at extreme Shifts, and Corner crops (just to prove its improved enlarged Image Circle IQ !)

Duccio Malagamba (external link), professional arquitecture photographer, has taken some time to test his Canon 24mm TS-E compared to his recently purchased 24mm TS-E II.
The improvement in the max vertical shifted areas is clear in CA, sharpness, vigneting (I corrected that in order to see anything) and distortion. Still the >20Mpx sensor of the 1Ds MKIII used outresolves the optics in those shifted areas.

100% crop, f/12.9, neutral (DCRAW) development, no sharpening, minimum and equally applied to both images curve processing to lift shadows.

The RAW files available here:

24 TSE full shift (external link)

24 TSE II full shift (external link)

24 TSE II same framing as original TSE (external link) (i.e. a bit less than max shift since the TS-E II can shift more mm)

I posted some of my initial thoughts over on Dpreview: http://forums.dpreview.com …rum=1029&message=32457353 (external link) One of the interesting things is that 77mm filter usage is fine out to about 9mm of shift in portrait orientation, including CPL use. A standard filter will block the image circle past this point, but a bare 82-77mm stepdown ring will not.

again, the f8.0 crop, this time with USM applied (250/0.3):

I did these without a tripod in the never-ending Hokkaido summer rain (WTF is going on this year?!), but the image quality even at full shift here is pretty impressive by f8, and f11 looks near perfect even on the 5D2.
