I'm hoping I am posting in the right section for this topic.

I'm from So Cal and live very close to the beach. I've been playing around a lot with long exposure shots ranging from only a few seconds to 5 or 6 minute exposures. I've been traveling up and down the coast when I have the time looking for location spots to shoot, especially where there are rock formations, tide pools, and so forth. I've found a few interesting and fun spots such as Corona Del Mar, Dana Point Harbor or the beach at the north end of the harbor, Woods Cove is also very pretty but only at certain times of the day when low tide is going on, and San Onofre State Beach in some sections is a great place to shoot for long exposure, and Palos Verdes Peninsula close to the light house.

Does anyone know of anyplace else along the So Cal coast that are great spots for long exposure shots? I have ideas in my head of the comps I am looking for but unfortunately I have yet to find such places. Thanks in advance for any replies

Apologies in advance Angie I just can't help myself with this........I'm led to believe that Venice Beach is good for long exposure and interesting forms.LOL
Hope someone can give you a better answer.

Hi Boss,

Thank you for the reply. Believe it or not, I've only been to Venice Beach maybe 2 times in my entire life and the times I have been there wasn't to check the place out or even walk the boardwalk if that's what they call it. I was in and out very fast. I'm not much of a person for crowded places as well as the traffic. But I never would have thought that Venice might be a good spot. I know heading a bit up north from Venice there are some good spots but not sure if I want to travel that far for just a few good shots and a quick spur of the moment shoot which is how a lot of my trips have been lately and that is last minute, let's go kinda thing.

It would definitely be an all day event if I do head down there. If you know of any other possible places say from Huntington Beach heading south, I'm most interested or even going up north and I can just make it an all day trip. At any rate, thank you for the reply!! I'm hoping to get a few more replies so my searching along the coast will be more hits than misses. Hell, I've even gone as far as pulling up detailed maps of the coastline in hopes of trying to narrow the search down a bit.

Are you looking for the smooth water flowing over rocks types of shots?
Or are you looking for night time shots with pretty lights?

For really long (and disgusting) exposures, visit the north end of Blacks Beach in La Jolla.

It's a gay nude beach. Used to be hippies and college girls (back when I used to go there for surfing), but now it's just surfers and gay dudes in visors and flipflops only.

It's scary.

Thank you. bw!

Thanks for the reply, Tdragone!!

Right now, I am more interested in flowing water shots over rocks or possibly other structures. The whole pretty light thing, kinda sorta, and is an interest. I've been playing around a lot with very long exposures. My latest thing right now are star trails, you know, the exposure times of an hour or more or what have you and have come up with some decent results and now completely addicted to it. I'm hoping perhaps to get out to a nice serene placid lake in hopes of capturing the star trails in addition to reflections of the star trails in the water. Big Bear Lake might be a place to start but not sure and haven't explored it enough to get a better idea if it's ideal or not for those star trail reflections.

Although I am more interested in the water flowing over rocks kinda deal, if you have any suggestions for the pretty light deal, I'm definitely all ears!! LOL :)

Eeek and yikes to that one. I've heard many things about Blacks Beach and stay away from there. Although I know there are some really nice places in La Jolla for long exposure shots, again, just have to find them. Blacks Beach is definitely not my cup of tea but thank you for the suggestion.
