Hey all, haven't posted a bird in a while. I'm enjoying my vacation here in Florida, minus the mosquitos here in the Everglades. An Osprey from yesterday, holding its (I dunno how to tell the difference between males and females) lunch, a catfish. I shot this from a moving boat - that wasn't easy .

Very nice shot. I see you posted in the boat thread. I have been out with a friend several times now, and I found it surprisingly easy to shoot hand held from his moving boat. although it was a flat bottom, flat front Jon style boat and the river was glass smooth, I still found it surprisingly easy to get good shots while moving, sometimes coasting, some times a full throttle. I think the flat bottom boats are more stable than a V hull. Just a guess. :)

Thanks! The hardest thing, I found, was having to both pan the birds and fight the movement of the boat when they were moving in opposite directions - it's effectively twice as fast. Plus, a big wave would throw my aim off completely. Camera shake was a problem too, I basically had to keep shutter speeds at 1/2000 and up.

Nice shot. This looks like a male osprey as their chests are completely white. The females have like a "necklace" of brown feathers and are generally bigger birds.

400 5.6L, 5D, and yeah it's cropped. I forget by how much though, like 50%.

I hope to make it to the Everglades some day. Keep the pics coming so I can see what I'm missing.

Enjoy your trip.

Haha, I was actually fishing that day, didn't catch anything, and this guy was flying by us as we were leaving. It felt like he was taunting us.

Thanks! I got a good view of him taking off from a tree with the fish, he was bringing it back to the nest.
