I asked about this yesterday and got a world of info. I am a noob and on a budget. I want to add a lens to my bag. I have the 18-55 IS kit lens. a 75-300 non IS lens also. I have narrowed it down to the 55-250 IS or the nifty 50 prime lens. Which should I purchase in your opinion and why? Thanks

Your 18-55 IS has very good optical quality and covers the focal length of the 50. And with IS it'll shoot just as low light as the 50 f/1.8 for a non-moving subject.

OTOH, the 75-300 is optically mediocre, while the 55-250 is much better. And has IS.

The 55-250 is a perfect match for your 18-55.

I'd sell the 70-300 and buy the 55-250 IS.

What are your main goals for this new lens? The nifty fifty is great for learning how to use lenses with a fast aperture and is fun because it allows you to mess around with depth of field (blurring backgrounds). On the other hand, the 55-250 is a good quality zoom with IS that will cover a number of different shooting situations.
