I just took a quick glance at your site. That's an interesting take on tintypes! I used to play around photographing Civil War re-enactors (I'm not far from Gettysburg) & then adjusting to "look" old, like adding a little motion blur. My images turned out really good to be honest. But one day I decided I was going to attempts tintypes out of an old Ansco Viking Readyset. What a mess! Much respect for people that do this.

Also, it sure looks like you & your family have a lot of fun with your portraits!!

These were some type of turbine or generator outside the old train station? Maybe someone here can help ID.

This is Hotel Loyal. It's mainly a bar & pizza shop now. This place use to see a lot of action back in the day as it is only 2 blocks from the old Rolling Rock Beer brewery.

It's a large building, taking up half a block. It's also only half a block from the train station.

The darker piece is the drive motor. The other piece appears to be some sort of pump, but if so the inlet and outlet pipes are in unusual positions. Could be an air or vacuum pump, but my best guess is a big sump pump. Not sure why a RR station would need a pump that big.

Thanks for the info. There were actually more than 1, in this photo of the front of the station you can see 2 in the lower right. Maybe I'll post it on the "train" thread, someone there might know.

Thanks! We started shooting wacky family portraits in 2009 and haven't stopped. We make Christmas cards out of the yearly portrait.

I shoot wet plate traditionally using a Chamonix 4x5, 8x10, or 11x14 but I also print tintypes by using film or digital inter positives and an 8x10 enlarger. The rest of the process is the same. I love that it opens up all subject matter to wet plate. The sailing photos, for example, would not have been possible with the long exposure times needed for in camera tintypes.

Finally got the Lomography scanner for getting the sprockets, but my scanner keeps throwing "error". I'll do some research, I'm sure it's OE. I tried scanning with the film stretched across my 120 mask, it turned out OK but it was not taut. So not sure if the softness is from that or the fact I shot it on a 70 year old camera.

The sprockets provide a little exif data LOL.

The exif data of the film looks sharp and the bottom right of the wagon looks sharp, so it is either lens softness/focusing or curly film plane..

Some simple photos

You are right, curling is an issue. Was thinking of trying some type of backing paper across the back to hold the film flat. This one looks a little better, hard to tell because the train was moving & the shutter is approx. 1/40. The fact I can't stretch the film tight to scan it isn't helping matters any.

Attempting to make a pinhole cover for the lens on my Kodak Brownie. I drilled a 1.5mm hole in a 35mm film container lid, and taped it over the lens on my brownie. The aperture opening is roughly 5.5mm. So would putting the pinhole be equal to going down 2 stops? My reasoning is based on 5.5/2=2.8, then 2.8/2=1.4
Since the shutter speed is approx 1/50 sec, I would need 1/12 second to make an equivalent exposure??
f/stop would be f/64??

I was thinking I could use a longer shutter speed, 1/12 would really be hard to time. 10 seconds would be much easier. :)

Maybe I need to just heat a needle and make a much smaller hole.

Right now I’m out of fixer. Can’t develop anything till I get some. Downside of living in a rural area. I’m 120 miles from the closest film supply shop. Thank God for Amazon.
