Earlier this week, some ***hole broke into my new F150 and stole my camera bag with my 30D, 70-200 f4, 17-85, 10-22 and all the goodies. The silver lining is that they managed not to damage my new truck at all.
I'm planning to replace with a 50D, but the Nikon D300 looks pretty tempting
too. Anyone done a real side to side comparison of the two? I'm retiring soon
and will be doing private investigating work. Thus, the need for a crop camera and good low light shooting.
Appreciate your input.

D300 beats 50D in high ISOs but neither is the best at those settings.

I'd also invest in a security system for your new truck if its that easy to break into it

Handle both, shoot with both, consider the lenses needed, then decide.

I'm not a fan of Nikon's ergonomics (or lens lineup for that matter), but in terms of features and image quality, the D300 is very tempting. Better (slightly) ISO performance and 8fps with a battery grip would be nice. But I am very happy with my 50D.

Personally, if i was told t ostart from scratch and had no lenses or previous investment, id find it a very hard choice

For me, Nikon vs Canon ergonomics are nothing, I like both really, I feel both have advantages and disadvantages and i work well with either...I also admit that while the white finish on the Canon lenses is lovely sometimes, I'd much prefer black...

I admit that right now if it were me...It would be a heck of a decision...On one hand, the D300 has the features I want more in a body, But Nikon's lens lineup lacks a lens equivalent to my most used lens [the 100-400L, and no, the 80-400 does not count]

I mean heck its tempting enough that I might just get another Bigmos if i was in that situation...Although I dont know how happy I'd be

On the other hand, the 50D is a good camera, but the biggest feature I want is a better AF system, and the 50D doesnt really have that...

Right now i sorta have a thing in my head going "If Nikon comes out with a reasonably priced competetor to the 100-400 before Canon comes out with a reasonably priced competetor to the D300, Then i switch, otherwise i stay" My list of wanted lenses is a pretty..universal one to be honest [70-200 f/2.8 IS, Sigma 150 macro, Sigma 50 f/1.4, 300 f/2.8 IS, 24-70 f/2.8]

So I'm patiently waiting on the 60D for now and hoping my 30D doesnt die before then...

Short term it depends what lenses you really need. In a straight body duel I would go D300 but widen the picture out and lenses are a key issue when modern semi and pro bodies are basically delivering much of a muchness in IQ terms. For me the move to Nikon was easy as my most used stuff is Zeiss MF primes. If I needed the 100-400 and such well I'd choose different. In three years time I suspect the picture will be very different with lenses. I do miss the 70-200mm IS L 4.0 and 400mm L still, but I hire the nice Nikon stuff now and so no big deal the few times I really need them each year.

If you are already familiar with Canon just get the 50D. As many said Nikon lens options is not as good as the canons.

I've switched back and forth between Nikon, Canon, and even Olympus at least twice in all brands. I have to tell you that the switch is not worth it. Once I start thinking switch, in my personal experience, I am thinking less and less about images and taking pictures and becoming more and more obsessed with equipment. That being said, I firmly believe Canon is the best brand for all jobs that I am familiar with. Their lenses are generally less expensive, especially the superteles, and I have never noticed an inferiority in quality or performance.

These brands will continue to leapfrog eachother over the next 100 years. The D300 is an incredible body; I've used it extensively and I love Nikon ergonomics. But Canon has so many excellent lens options, and when push comes to shove, IMO, the lens is much more important for me to get the shot than any slight differences between bodies.

I long for Canon to make a body, tough and rugged, just like the D300. But Canon hasn't done that yet. When I make a Nikon wishlist at BHPhoto, filling it with a D700/D300 and lenses, I always stop myself before ordering. Why? Because their lenses don't match my needs, both present and future. I have many more "clear" options, (clear meaning a full line of distinguished top nothc lenses, the L series), for me to choose from.

Thats my 2 cents. Good luck!

The Nikon D300 is a pro body and well worth the money....It`s better than the 50D by far......Get the D300...I should have bought the D300 over the D90, but it has the same sensor, just not a few of the options.....You can`t go wrong with the D300. I have a friend that`s a professional and he uses it for everything.;)

Sorry to hear of your misfortune. Selecting the Nikon D300 camera body vs the Canon 50D is a no-brainer. However, I am partial to Canon glass over Nikkor glass.

Thanks very much all for your input....I have a couple of weeks to make up my mind. KenjiS....I agree with you re the 80-400. My work camera is a D70 and that's one of the lenses I'm issued....it's a brick. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I'll likely stick with Canon for the big reason of the great glass, but as others have said, that D300 is a sweet body. thanks again
