Considering upgrading from a 30D. I would appreciate some feedback to convince me it is worth the extra expense to go for the 1D Mk III over the 50D.

If ya got the money to blow...1d3 all the way.

The 50d is still a fine camera, but I'd take a 1d3 in a heartbeat over it.

There is nothing like a 1-series camera. Nothing.

Yup, why not? Of course you could buy a 5D2 instead. Or, the typical response, buy the 50D and get good glass ;)

I'd get the 1D3 over the 50D any day.

Sure. They also live in the Arctic, mountains, cages... The MKIII has more functionality at the price of cost, weight, ease of use, portability... So, where do your interests lay?

Personally, I cannot imagine lugging around any of the 1D series as my only camera. I find the XXD and XD line to suit my needs, though there are certainly some customizations and features available on the 1D series I would love to have on smaller professional formats. I'd like to own one of each, but two bodies are enough to cover all my needs and I try to imagine a day where I could perhaps meet all my needs/wants with just one.

What do you shoot and how frequently? Where do you intend to shoot? Everything is a compromise of one type or another, and if you can get past the bragging rights, you can hopefully find the body that delivers what you desire. I'd look at the D300 and D700 if you are looking in this price range and haven't already invested heavily in lenses(though, I firmly believe Canon has a superior lens line up all around). They are both worth considering and Nikon offers some features the Canons do not and lack others the Canons provide.

The only thing worth considering is what is important to you and your style of shooting. None of us can comment on what works best for your situation without more information. If you have specific questions regarding the bodies, I am certain there will be plenty of us that can reliably contrast and debate the merits/demerits of each based on our own experiences. Otherwise, if you can read between the lines, there are many reviews that can be helpful in your search.

the 1d3 is the best all-around DSLR made by anyone, imo. the 30d isn't :D.

The price difference alone should be a hint at the levels between the two models.

1D3 but don't forget you'd have to sell your 17-55. The Sigma will work from 12 or 14mm (can't remember which) with no vignetting so you can keep that one if you want.

Sure there is

Another 1 series camera :)

Same opinion here, 50D is great, but the 1D Mark III induces physical illness when you're away from it :) Its that good

Well I love my MKIII but I've seen huge amounts of excellent photos take by a friend of mine who shoots the 30D, absolutely no apologies when looking at the prints, all wildlife and landscape stuff.

So the 50D is supposed to be a very nice camera but one thing to think of if you shoot a lot, the MKIII is rated for 300,000 shutter clicks as an average, I'm guessing the 50D is around 100,000 to 150,000 and for me that makes a difference as I'm really loving shooting a lot with the MKIII.

The focus is fantastic with the MKIII, for portraits it seriously shames my wonderful 5d that was such a great camera. I have so many more keepers with the MKIII. The 1.3 crop is just right for me, I love it with all of the lenses in my sig and don't plan to ever go back to FF after having this camera unless there is a real reason which I cannot attach to right now.

But look at what you do, there's a lot of money difference between the two, probably there will be a 60D in the fall, don't know when the MKIV will come out but I'm guessing not for a year at least. I got my MKIII from Adorama refurbished and am very happy with the deal and with the camera.

Huh?

This is like saying is it worth it to buy a Porsche over an Accord. There is such a huge range between the camera, and we have no idea what you shoot, how you shoot, and how critical that level of quality is.

"... to convince me it is worth the extra expense to go for the 1D Mk III over the 50D

Money aside here are the realities of things you will notice among the two that will separate them from the 30D:

*Focusing:
1D= Equal to none, stands alone. As a result a dramatic change in keeper rates.
50D= Possibly no noticeably difference in most situations. I would consider it negligible.

* Image Quality:
1D= Highest quality in Canon current line. ISO 1600 looks like 400 on 30D.
50D= Very high quality improvement. More resolution for cropping flexibility.

* Live view and micro focus adjustment:
Invaluable technological improvement that both cameras have.

There are a hundred other things that you could separate between the two but that is the nature of such a large disparity in price in this type of equipment.

To be honest if I was shooting a 30D alone I would have to decide if a better screen, more pixels, micro focus adjustment and live view were things i just had to have to upgrade to a 50D.

The 1DIII is a special machine.
