I have been looking for a way to get longer focal lengths when I don't want to carry the weight of the 500mm f4.
I went out to the Orlando wetlands this morning with the 1DsMKII and the 100 400 f5.6 IS zoom and the 1.4 TC.
I walked about 2 miles and made it much better than I would have if I was carrying the 500 f4.
These shots are at 560mm Wide open. The focus is a little slower but it is still very usable.

What do you think about the image with the TC?
These are still rather large crops.

The images look nice and crisp -- not much IQ loss detectable at all.

They are good shots for wide open, I like the Egret flight shot.

Thanks Judy;
I will stop it down a bit and see if that helps.

Thanks Ken;
I liked the reflection on that one.

Hey, Bill, good shooting.

I think you already know my views from 'the other' forum. The 100-400 is an excellent lens and certainly very versatile. However, it will not give yo the same IQ that your 500 will.

In fact, I have one on it's way to me but I know what its limitations are going to be. I've done a lot of research on this lens and have come away with some ideas of what to expect from it. From everything I've read, it's performance is okay with a TC, but not great. Also, at 400mm it starts to give the best images when stopped down to at least f/7.1 and preferably f/8.

I know you're going to tell me I already owned one but I never really gave it a chance. I only kept it a couple of days. I plan to work with this one to see what works best with it.

Shooting with more great Canon gear than I deserve. :rolleyes: :rolleyes: :rolleyes:
I don't need a second childhood. I'm not finished yet with the first one. :lol:

Sorry I missed this Harv;
Keep me posted about your findings on the 100 400.
