I can net $500 on legs, head, plates, etc. Can someone hook me up or point me in the right direction? :p I'm 6' and I like to hike regularly, often in the rain. CF would be nice if possible. :D Heaviest set-up on rig would be 1D MkIII w/ EF 300 f/4L ( I can plan for the future right?)

If you want to hold that gear and have CF for lightweight hiking ability you're going to need more than $500 total.

I did a review on my Feisol 3442 and Photo Clam PC-40NS ballhead. Very light weight, very strong, and I take it with me everywhere. I just took it on a 35 km hike through the Garibaldi mountain range here and I didn't notice it at all. I actually forgot I had it because it's not heavy (only 4 lbs total).

I spent about $600 USD total for my set-up and that includes the L-bracket, ballhead, and tripod.

I only have a Canon 30D right now so I was thinking about investing in a sturdy set of legs and I can upgrade BH/Plates/Clamp later. Good idea or no?

Could be, but if you skimp in one area that just weakens the stronger points. A good set of legs is only effective when paired with a good ballhead (or head to make things simpler).

You don't need an L-bracket, that's just what I went for because well let's face it they're awesome, but I would concentrate on getting the BEST legs and head you can afford now.

I don't want to purchase a skimpy BH right now, but I certainly don't need one that supports 20-30lbs either.

Can anyone else recommend a set-up?

Take a look at Flashpoint tripods and ballheads from Adorama. From everything I've read they get good reviews, and they're very affordable. They might just do the trick for you.

check out the one in my sig. it meets your criteria and is light enough for travel (3 lbs.) as well as sturdy enough for everyday use.
