The image of your daughter is just fine although a bit soft (1/10 sec shutter). Watch your backgrounds carefully. The structure (dock/pier?) behind her distracts a lot. Allow more image below her for a better base to balance the subject placement. Other than that you did well in placing her in the shade...............tw

If you don't already have it, select only the center focus point. In your image you will see that the corner of the blanket on the right side is in better focus than anything else.

The problem with focusing is that I didn't take the picture with her in the center. I just cropped it that way. I used the multipoint focus on the XTi, but I have a split focus screen. When I review the pics in the camera, they look great. I wish I could view them better in the field.

Use that center focus. Focus on your daughter, and then hold the focus while you compose the shot...

Most of you are missing that this image was taken at 1/10 sec. & even with a tripod any subject movement will make it look soft or out of focus.

Actually, it was about 1/20 sec. I used a heavy density filter to combat the morning sun

Sorry, your EXIF says otherwise. It doesn't really matter at this stage but, I would be careful (with little ones) to keep the shutter at least 1/200 sec. It's still a good photo even if a little soft...............tw
