Took these this past weekend. What do you think? Does B&W work for these?

black and white is just another way to make a mood. it usually tends to be nostalgiac/somber from my experience. the second photo it works great with the expression. the first would have been equally good in color.

I agree with the others, the second one is a better candidate for b&w.

the "art" to b/w work, imo, is to give flatter scenes some contrast. b/w suffers in lower lighting, again my opinion, because w/o color you dont have much natural interest. in other words, interesting colors cant "bail you out." b/w is much more a "purist" thing because your margin for error is so small.

i tend to like tighter crops, like #2, for b/w work. #1 tends to wash out the farther back i go creating a lot of dead space once i get past the pup's head.

a fun thing for b/w work is to play with reflected light. position a subject in a window or pose someone against a mirror. stuff like that will lend to decent lighting indoors.

not that you had bad lighting here, you didnt. its just something to play with going forward if you like b/w stuff and shoot indoors a lot.

Straightening...lol. Every time I straighten the horizon, I hang the picture crooked.

So do I. When I first picked up a camera, it was with B&W film, so I got to like tight crops. It's carried over into my digital photography as well... at least 80% of my shots end up being tight crops.

Thanks all for the comments, I'm leaning more towards #2 as well, I'll post the color version of #1 later tonight.

funny....me too. my first photo days were for a small newspaper that only published in b/w. so, i had all the b/w film i could handle. i wont profess to be a great photographer, but i did start to develop an eye for b/w. and, i always appreciated the purity/charm of monochromatic work.

90% of my critiques tend to be advising people to cut out dead space in their shots. lol. we see eye to eye there.

The second one is very nice and B&W works well for both.
