Technically, some of the photos just seem brutal to me, but I don't know if I'm being overly critical. For example:

IMO, getting rid of shadows behind the subjects is something that should be very basic.

i especially love the picture of the groom choking his mother on the right!

I can understand you asking about the qualities of a good photographer, but personally, I have a difficult time picking apart a photographer who has not asked to have his work critiqued. It just doesn't feel very professional or ethical to me.

Sun, I know you've said that you're not an expert, but you did identify some faults in his work. If you spend any time on this site, you can immediately see the difference between quality work and work that is not up to standard. My suspicion is that you know what makes a good picture and what doesn't.

I agree with Tim, just be honest with your relative. You might want to find another photographer in their area that has a descent quality and price to compare to this photographer. That way they will have some alternatives. Sometimes the proof is in the pudding.

I don't have any problem at all critiqueing work that is posted on a website. If someone posts it on the Internet, they are doing so to have their work evaluated. It's like a Sports Illustrated model complaining that someone is criticizing her body. IMO, it's neither unprofessional nor unethical. I'm really not sure why you feel so.

Most people can tell the difference between good work and bad work. I was more looking for a scale of badness just to make sure it was as "bad" as I thought.

The challenge is that this photographer is a family friend. I brought up the subject, but was told the bride's side of the family was obligated to use this photographer.

I see your point. I guess you're right. I know that I try never to put anything up on the web or give anything to a customer that I'm not 100% satisfied with for that very reason. It just seemed like this thread was an opportunity to take a photographers work and point out all of the unsatisfactory qualities and, in some ways, to poke fun at their work. That is what seemed unethical to me. It's one thing to ask for critique when it's your work and it's another thing to be critiqued and then when people Google your name this thread pops up at the top of the list. I have seen competitors start threads similar to this on this forum before. Because POTN gets such high traffic, threads like this pop up on google close to the top. Starting a thread such as this is a good way to get a competitor closed down.

I suppose the photographer shouldn't be putting work up that's less than satisfactory. You're in a bind where it's a friend of the family. Again, I would show your relative the difference. If they still choose to go with the family friend, that's their choice. At least you did your part and they made a full informed decision thanks to your advice.
