My Canon 40D has an intermittent fault that it sometimes won't take photos. Canon have had it back to repair it and it's still the same. Now there saying it's the lens but it'd done this on 3 lenses and I would of thought the auto focus wouldn't work if it was the conections but it focuses fine. They haven't got another 40D in the whole company so the manager told me he doesn't know what to do so is asking Canon if they've got one. If they haven't what should I do? Someone's told me they should replace it with a 50D as it's only 5 months old so still in the guarantee.

Have you tried removing all batteries [Including the little watch battery] for 30 minutes and seeing if that fixes your problem?

Tried cleaning the contacts on all your lenses? Even if its intermittent its worth a shot...

Any more criteria about it "not taking pictures" ie is it giving err 99 or something?

As for Canon replacing it with a 50D whoever told you that was way off, Canon would likely replace it with a refurb 40D, because that is exactly fair and right in this instance..

your not actually saying what lenses are giving the problem ,are they canon or sigma or tamron ,are they up to date digital lenses or older ones bought of of e/bay ,for instance i have just bought a sigma 135-400mm lens for my 40d and the aperture will not close down although wide open its superb ,i have today contacted sigma u.k and its a simple cheap "chip" upgrade to enable the camera and lens to talk to one another .when it comes back i'm confident that i will have a super lens at a third of the price of the latest rip off price ones

changed systems to MFT olympus omd1-E.M1X , Olympus 100-400 zuiko .., xiaoyi 42.5mm f1.8 . four thirds mmm-2 ,, four thirds 11-22.. and pergear 60mm f2.8 macro

Given he said 3 lenses, im guessing the three in his sig, one of which is a Canon which shouldnt be giving any problems

It's a problem with all my lenses, 2 are canon and 2 sigma so I know it can't be the lens that aren't working. I've cleaned all the contacts. I'm getting no error message. I focus and it beebs and the green light in the viewfinder comes on to say it's focused but when I fully press the shutter button. Nothing.
It's had a new processor, new electronics, a service and a clean and I'm still getting the same problem. Now they're saying they don't know what to do and just looked at me I thinking hoping I'd say it's ok I can cope with a camera that doesn't take pictures. The only 40D they can find is a ex-display but they won't give me some money back and I've paid full price which I'm not happy with.

depends on what country you live in with retail laws etc ,is the camera going back to a retailer or official canon service centre ,either way your next move would to be to contact canon themselfs as its obvious there subsidarys cannot deal with it .

I've heard about cameras having a bad trigger button, but considering this camera was serviced, one imagine they would have thought about that, if it was that simple.
Have you tried a battery grip or remote control on the camera? When the trigger button fails, it usually works through the remote socket anyway.

How often does the problem occur? You may try re-flashing the firmware.

If it were me I would be screaming and banging on the table. You paid for a fully functioning camera and that is what you should have, at least for a full year. There is no way Canon can't find a new 40D anywhere in the world, even if they have to fly it to you from Timbuktu. And don't let them tell you it's because you used non-Canon lenses. I and hundreds of thousands other people use third party lenses without mishap.

Same here, Definately time to start complaining heavily to them :/

I wouldnt even mention the fact i used 3rd-party lenses at all, Just leave it at mutliple lenses, All Canon....

I seriously SERIOUSLY doubt they cant get you a new 40D or a heavily refurbed one or something for this...

One thought by the way, Perhaps try switching the lens into MF when this happens and seeing if that fixes the problem? No clue if it will work or not..but it might be worth a try?

How often does this occur? If it's say, every hundred shots, that's often enough to do some "testing." So......REMOVE the lens and LEAVE it off. Now when you're watching TV, just take a few shots and see if you can get the error to "happen." If so, it's obviously a camera body problem.

They offered you the display camera? Shoot, ask them to clean the sensor and warrant it from the date of exchange and move forward. It's probably used less than the one you have now, and it probably is fine.

Depends on the store. If it were Best Buy or Futureshop I wouldn't touch one of their display cameras. They leave them on display with no lens or body cap attached, and I've seen mirrors that were ruined by scratches and fingerprints.
