2nd Place: Monty. Love this photograph Monty, and not only does it make me feel far away – it make me feel like I am almost on another planet.

Well today is the 30th anniversary of the Lunar Landing ;-)a

Yay Lava! Great captures, all.

Since the motorcycle accident, I have not been far from home at all (save for New Mexico in April). My balcony IS the jungle for both me and my tigers. This photo was from one of my 'expeditions' into this jungle, and the words are from my memoir, "Tails from the Balcony Jungle." Otherwise, my collection of 'far from home' photos are rather limited...hence the capture of 'Chloe" ready to pounce a swallow... Just having fun with your comp.

Cheers

Jason C

It's actually the 40th... hard to believe.
I do remember watching it when I was a little kid on a little b/w TV! Made me want to be an astronaut! Some parts of Yellowstone could look like the moon!

I may be fascinated with volcanoes, but the name's Lisa.

Awesome images everyone!!

Lavanut, I want to walk right into that church. I can feel the coolness of the mountains. Congrats. (yes, my camera is fixed).
Monty--I'm a sucker for mist. Gorgeous.
John_B--Hawaii is on my todo list!
Chris--Love the scattered sunlight. Reminds me of a shot of Bartlett Lake I tried eons ago with a 110 instamatic. Couldn't understand, then, why those golden hills were so blah in the prints. I think you nailed it.
Billbo--The view takes my breath away! (Why did your wife take off her shoes?)

Thanks for the HM Chris and the C&C. Always welcome. I don't think I would have entered this shot for this competition if it weren't for the story part. I always think the back story adds to a photograph and makes it that much better. Great idea!
Looking forward to more!

.........

Billbo: I can almost feel the pain of that hike! I recently climbed Table Mountain in South Africa in 90 degree heat, and it really kicked my butt. The great reward always comes at the top when you get to shoot the panos. That Tokina had so much to drink in and bend, it really looks like the top of the world up there. Lovely gal you have there too – I wish she had taken off the dark glasses though, or that you could have gotten and angle where the sun wasn’t to her back. Great shot, and an excellent story.

When I was chimpin this shot, I noticed the shadowing caused by having her back to the sun. So, I quickly popped up the flash and took this shot. Now, please don't tell my wife I posted this, she really doesn't like this picture of her. I know I should have asked her to pose a little nicer, but that is not why I'm posting it.
I completely agree that the look with the sun at her back is not the best, but, look what a difference a little fill flash can make!

Maybe next time I'll remember to ask her to show her pearly whites.

Ah, I'm sorry I missed the reference to the blog, and the accident Jason. I'm a freshly minted rider with less than 400 hrs in the seat, so I can't imagine what it's like.

Are you on the mend?

Hey, no worries and there is no blog. I was just being creative in my story, painting a picture of some far off expadition. Sounds a heck of a lot better than stating the litteral truth: I was taking pictures of my cats on my balcony, when Chloe saw a bird...;)

The legs are healed up as much as their gonna get, but the accident has seemed to magnify leg issues I have slowly been getting with time...such is life. I miss riding dearly, I mean 25 years riding stopped with one telephone pole...I miss it.

Postive attributes from the accident is that I got to continue living, and was not paralyzed in the process.

Anyway, back to the image.

Yeah, I was just having fun with the comp with a bit of creative writing. I tell ya, I was lucky to get what I got in that frame with 1/60th sec shutter at 200mm with no bracing...very lucky.

The winner was certainly a worthy choice. Congrats to Lisa. Like Airfrogusmc, I had something I considered posting...but time got away from me...and then it was past the deadline. There is always the next one.
