Hmmmm, the greenies wouldn't like this, all those greenhouse gases being emitted! They will try to ban it soon!! (or tax it) ;) :D

You know, that conjures up a hilarious image in my head....some greenies waving protest slogans and yelling at an active volcano.

Truth be told, I sometimes wonder at my own sanity regarding my and Missus Skygod's decision to purchase a home, 7km as the eruption-debris flies, across the bay from a gaping hole into the abyss.

But then I think about a colleague of mine who, with her husband, bought a house ON THE VOLCANO......and I think, maybe "sanity" is a matter of perspective.....

Cool image. I don't think I'd want to live that close to an active volcano--particularly one that gets 'angry' 3-6 times each week. But it might be nice to make a short visit to...

Thanks for the comment Michael.

Actually, Sakurajima (and my home, nearby!) is a L-O-N-G way south, so most tourists never come this far, instead staying around Tokyo, Osaka, Hiroshima, Kyoto, etc.....
It's a shame, but I don't mind as it means there are less photographers (who can speak English and use English websites) to compete against!!!

Cool shot's mate, how close can you get to the eruption? Without catching on fire that is.

Hey Chino, well to answer your question, there's a "viewing tower" (more like, "let's all be poisoned by noxious gases and burned to death" tower!) about 2km to the NNW of the active peak, so when the volcano is being active - like now - then a day or two camped out there would "guarantee" some scary action.

My home is across the bay, about 7km in a straight line from the volcano - so we have relatively deep water as a natural barrier is she really blows, though the big eruption 12,000-odd years ago ejected house-sized rocks as far as Tokyo (900km NE) and South Korea (700km NNW)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
