I have a swim shoot scheduled. It will be my first swim pics.
This is not during an event, just me and the model and a closed lane.

I'm looking for emotional pics of fly and free strokes, maybe some breast. I was thinking of having the camera at/near water level, maybe holding it via a monopod and triggering with a chord. Fly and breast from the pool end, freestyle from the side.

I have minimal experience with a off camera flash, though I have a 420.

Can anyone give me some suggestions on set up, settings, etc.?
Thanks in advance.
Tom

Faces are the key to images of the kind you want to create, and they're hard to get from competitive swimming. In many cases, swimmers compete face down, as shown here where a swimmer is practicing a start at the national championships.

An elevated position doesn't give you a view of the face, so you'll need to work very low at deck level, perhaps with the camera a few inches from the deck.

Freestyle doesn't always give you a good look at faces, because not all swimmers take a big breath on alternate strokes.

The backstroke, the only stroke with the swimmer face up, is the best stroke to get an unhindered view of a competitor's face.

Butterfly and breaststroke swimmers can generate good low-level shots, as long as your timing is good and you can catch them at their high point in the water.

You can get great shots of all strokes. With one swimmer in a non-race situation, you'll be able to set up what you like. It's very different in a race depending which lane your swimmer is in, and where on deck you get to shoot from.

Some things I find help:

Backstroke - time it so the far arm is up, if the near arm is up, it'll block the face. If the swimmer is in the lane in front of you, you'll pretty much get a full face shot just after he or she passes you because you can swing around and shoot from almost behind.

Freestyle: you'll be able to set this up so the turn for a breath is always toward you. Otherwise you need to find the swimmer's pattern for breathing...left, right, none, or 2 left, 2 right, etc.... you also won't need to be concerned with another swimmer's wake as you would in a race

Breast: close lanes can be from the deck; although the stroke is better exemplified from one of the ends; one of the easiest to shoot as the swimmer must come up on each stroke. Just work on timing.

Butterfly: similar to breast, but the swimmer does not need to lift head out of water on each stroke, so you've got to find the pattern of breathing. In a race, if you're at an end, the 'flyer will often bring it in the last 5-10 metres without a breath....just head-down-get-to-the-wall type of finish, so be aware - you may not get your shot.

I shoot the odd time with a flash at an indoor meet, but not often. Shutter speeds need to stay high, which isn't easy in many of the dimly lit pools.

here's a thread I just put up of the Canadian National Championships/World Trials Meet from last week.
