Not sure whats going on. I previously owned an original canon rebel xt camera. 8mp. I would shoot my pictures for ebay stuff on full auto mode and they were bright an excellent. I just recently trade up to an xsi..brand new 12mp. Problem is...shooting in the same hallway, with the same above light, full auto...the pictures are coming out really dark and shadowed as compared to my old pictures. I even compared the pictures taken outside and they are "darker" and ive never seen noise in my pictures in my old camera , as im seeing with the new one. Does anybody know if my new camera could be faulty? I thought that the noise was supposed to improve with the newer camera..not get worse..and the pictures are just looking darker..using the auto modes full flash. Ive only shot about 50 pics with this new camera..and im not happy..please help!!

Could be multiple reasons, not enough light, have the EC set low, etc, Post examples and your metadata so we can determine the problem.

Posting pictures from the XSi when in full auto will tell everyone what settings it is choosing for you. Doesn't have to be a shot for shot comparison. Have you checked the custom functions/white balance/etc... or done a full reset? Was it pre-owned or new? Same lens I assume as well?

camera was new..i tried factory reset in a manual mode..i guess it wont let you in full auto?? this picture was taken under a hall light..like a spotlight bulb..then with full auto flash on top of that..with the iso at 400..if you could have had the picture at full resolution and actual image size..it sucks

I would think the flash on the camera kinds of drowns out the hall light, and the onboard flash is kind of crap, so it didn't light it up well...i'm hitting the sack though, i'm sure everybody else will chime in, good luck, i'll catch up tommorow.

Looks to be what I'd expect for a shot like that. All the white in the frame is causing some underexposure. Also, the door seems a bit shiny, so the (pre)flash reflection is causing a bit of flash underexposure.

Go out and shoot some real photos in one of the non-auto modes (Av or M) and get back to us.

The camera exposed for the white wall which caused the box and wall to be under exposed. May try uping the FEC or get out of auto and try other modes such as AV or M. My XSi tends to under exposed by about 2/3 stop in the same situtation. Just need to take more pics to learn how the camera is operating and adjust your settings accordingly.

Different camera = different metering.
Also as others have eluded to, the white BG is throwing the camera off.
I see no problems here.
