Nowadays I see anything about a rebate where you have to send something in and I don't buy the product. I can't remember more than once ever actually getting the money. Sandisk has been offering rebates for a while now and instead I bought Ultra II CF and SD cards from Costco because the amount was figured into the purchase price. But then it was time I really wanted a Gitzo tripod and there was a $40 rebate, so I did what I was supposed to and they even said they got it in an email and that must have been a couple of months ago and no money, no nothing. If they don't take it off at the till, it's no deal unless I am willing to forgo and not even apply. I did buy two Sandisk CF 8G Extreem III cards and found them at a reasonable price between the listed retail and what I would supposedly have gotten if I'd bought ones with rebates.
The thing is I was already to pay retail months before, just looking for the best prices between Amazon, BH and Adorama but the rebate thing irritated me so much that I put it off for a long time.
if gitzo, or whoever, acknowledged that they received your submission, then you should follow up on it. a simple phone call can fix everything. these days they keep all of the information either by saving the hard copies or scanning them. if you ask them why they haven't sent the rebate check yet, they'll have to double check it. it could have been a mistake by either party.
this is how i handle my rebates. first of all, i send the rebate via USPS certified mail. it costs a bit more, but i know if they received it and they can't deny it. i photocopy everything i send in the envelope. i staple everything in the envelope together. i usually staple the upc code to the form, outline it with a hi-lighter, and draw an arrow pointing to it with the word "UPC" above it. sometimes, they overlook the upc otherwise. it can be small or even fall out of the envelope if they weren't careful. this way if i have a problem, i can email them my scanned copies or they can look into it on their own.
many rebates are denied because something was left out. whether it was the upc code, a copy of the receipt, etc. you should definitely look into it, though. at least find out why it was denied. that'll give you some peace of mind. who knows, you may even get your $40 dollars back.
