I didn't even think it possible but my 50L is clearly underexposing by about 1 full stop no matter which camera it is mated to. I have used it and witnessed it on my 5D, 1D2N and a friends 5D2. Have any of you experienced this with any of your lenses? I am now part of CPS as of today so hopefully Canon can figure this out for me!! John

Nope.

But that may be a good thing(:D) since I find that the 50L looks better when you slightly underexpose and then bring it back up in post, especially wide open.

At least that's been my experience. I absolutely despised the way things looked wide open until I started doing this.

I haven't experienced this with any of the copies of the 50L I tested, neither on 40D, not on 5D and 5D II.

Are you sure this isn't some vignetting, or the selected metering mode?

The first copy I ever tried of the 24-70L had bad vignetting, same with the first 85 F/1.8, but never seen it since, other than any expected vignetting.

Kind regards, Wim

I just tested it a little (such a bad idea I know). Even at 1.4 it produces sharper, more natural colors. I am thrilled with this lens for what I bought it for... night vision. But im pretty sure it needs to go to canon for calibration...

I agree with Wim. This lens tends to vignette a lot depending on what you are shooting, perhaps giving the impression of underexposing.

But yeah, if you have any doubts, send it in.

My first 50L, apart from being hopeless at focusing, had a weird trait where by it seemed to produce very little exposure tolerance in camera.

Ie- any sort of shooting to the left, even only a fraction, would produce dramatic noise in camera.

I shoot to the left anyway so this was a problem.

My second copy has the same tolerance as my other shorter L primes- ie I can underexpose happily without noise.

Weird. I wonder wether it was a similar problem to the OP. Ie it was just underexposing?

This sounds a lot like vignetting to me. Very strong when the lens is wide open and can easily make things look underexposed if your subject isn't right n the middle of the frame.
