can someone point me in the right direction or explain how this is done? I think i have an idea but i am just not certain and i would love to play around with some photos like this soon.

Switch to bulb mode. Get a light. Run through open exposure with the light on.

That's basically it, in a nutshell. The amount of time that the frame is open for and the exposure settings will need to be tweaked by the amount of ambient light is available.

Anyways, just start trying it and you'll get results pretty quickly. It's very fun.

What Todd said, + make sure that your battery is charged. Holding the shutter open eats up battery power.
