Hi,

I was hoping for some insight and your vote!
I am embarking on a road trip starting from Bay Area, CA up the Oregon Coast, to Seattle, over to Montana, drive through Yellow Stone, to Salt Lake City, across Nevada, then finally home.
I hope you were able to follow that :)

My equipment 5D 2, 30D, Canon 24-70 2.8L, Canon 10-22, 50 1.4.

Intended subject matter:
1) Candid photography
2) Nature (Landscape)

I want to borrow a 100-400 or 135 + 1.4 extender.
Which one do you think I should rent or am I going completely overboard and should just stick with my current selection.

Thanks!

Since you have nothing over 70mm I'd think something longer would be nice. If not the 100-400 perhaps the 70-200 f2.8 IS and a 1.4 tcon. Your current lineup is fine for the landscape but I'm guessing you're going to run in to some good wildlife opportunities and a telezoom would come in handy.

Are you wanting to do some wildlife or something that requires the extra length?

I just got back from vacation and Used my 17-40 and 85 1.8 for the majority of it. Used the 100mm macro and 70-200 once.

If you not going to be doing any wildlife/telephoto work than I say stick with what you have and save the weight in your bag.

I have never shot wild life before and wanted to be prepared.
70-200 2.8 with extender doesnt sound like a bad idea.

Any suggestions on where I should stop along my route?

You're not going to be able to resist taking some wildlife shots in Yellowstone. Get the 100-400.

Why not a 70-200 f2.8 or f4 and possibly a 1.4 and or a 2x teleconverter?

Never been to Yellowstone but want to! When I do, I picture myself with the 100-400 L IS "welded" on one of my bodies and sitting by my side the entire trip through the park!

You would only be missing a short range with that lens and the ones you have. It should work out!

OOPS! You do have that small gap covered if you put the 24-70 on the 30D!

How many days are you gone for?

The 70-200 2.8 + 2x gives you some nice versatility. But it'll be more expensive to rent than a 100-400mm, especially if you go 2.8 w/IS.

In general, 200mm is decent enough for a variety of sports photography....but not shooting wildlife. I need at the bare minimum 300mm, and in many cases 400mm +. So getting a 135mm + 2x extender may actually not even be enough to do some serious wildlife photography. You'll have spent all that money and may not even have the length you need.

I'd possibly even look at renting the Sigma 50-500 or Sigma 150-500, if you want to have ample flexibility on the long end.
