Hey folks, I have a friend who just lost his rebel film body, and he is looking into the most recent digital rebel series to replace. I am doing a little research for him and am wondering if I should steer him towards a previuously owned 30/40D. I understand that the 40D is an excellent body, and I don't think he wants to spend so much for a digital body. He would like to spend the savings on a lens. I will be seeing him in a few days and bringing some of the lenses in my sig. to let him play with them. He already has the 28-105mm. He will be shooting his kids (ages 3-9) some sports, some portraits.

What do you all think? Thanks for your suggestions!

Joe P

With the price levels that 40Ds have dropped to, I would definitely suggest a second hand 40D. Fantastic camera for the price, and yet it still has many of the bells and whistles that the newer cameras have (Live View, ability to control flash from body, etc.)

While the newest Rebel line have great technical features I think the control layout for shooting in the XXD body line still have the edge even in the older bodies. Being digital in a lot of cases your friend might find that some of the "missing" latest features in the older XXD bodies can be addressed by easier good shooting technique and post work in the digital world.
And if your friend has average to larger hands the feel of the XXD bodies is better with longer glass down the road (IMHO)

Lotsa stuff, running outta room and a wife...I keep looking at her and wondering???

Adorama's refurbished 40D

I got one and behaves and looks like new
If he has medium to large hands he will appreciate the ergonomics of a XXD body.

Cheers

either one will be good IMO. 30D is cheaper but for a few more bux the 40D is the way to go. Cant go wrong either way. I still rock my 30D! love it.

He is a bigger guy. I will tell him how small a body the Rebel bodies are. He should really try them out at Best Buy or the like.
