Is there a way to fix this?

Anyone have a secret for getting facebook photos to turn out well?

It seems especially bad with b&W (contrast sucks, darkest blacks are a dull Grey)

Facebook displays pictures at 604 pixels on the long side and will work best if you resize them yourself to those dimensions

(I'll assume you have a calibrated monitor. If not, my suggestions want matter until you calibrate your display.)

Besides making the long side 604 pixels, do all your color work in the sRGB color space and save the file with that profile embedded. For grayscale, I embed Gamma 2.2 and it seems to work best.

Using a browser that supports color management is also highly recommended.

All the above only helps to guarantee that the photos look good on your display. They may still look like crap on your friends display, but then again, most things will look like crap because they aren't used to seeing a color calibrated display and a browser that is color managed.

Facebook also uses a ridiculously heavy compression on the jpgs, so even then, they're going to look blotchy...

Or at least do not expect that your photos will look great on there. Rather use a website that is dedicated to photo storage and just link it to Facebook.

Yes, Flickr works for this. Every time you upload the link automatically shows on facebook.

Yep, and FF 3.5.1 by default. But it isn't correctly color managed yet.
And Flock 2.5, Omniweb (Mac) and rumours are that the upcoming version of Chrome will be as well.

At this moment, FF3.0.11 and Flock 2.5 are best.

I find you also need to sharpen them a bit more. :)

Facebook's compression algorithm is terrible. Quite often, it actually increases the file size while making the image quality worse.

1) Facebook images are stripped of metadata, including color profile informations
2) Facebook images are limited to 66kb (or close to it, never managed to get something larger than 65.7 or so)
3) Facebook images belong to facebook and they can do whatever they want to it, including making them "look like crap".

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

I think that has changed since the new TOS. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

It hasn't changed per say. It's just been reworded. They've never owned any member photos for anything other than displaying on the site in your photo albums according to the privacy settings you've specified.
