Hey salma, love your custom title

As for your question:

The limitations of using flash outdoors on a bright sunny day is the relative power of your flash Vs the Sun.

The brighter the sun, the higher output you need to put on your flash to overcome it and the hard shadows it will produce.

e.g if the sun is behind your subject you will need more power to prevent the shot from becoming a silhouette etc.

Speedlights in particular can be badly affected due to their relatively modest light output. You can correct this imbalance by either:

- moving the flash closer to the subject - you will have less light drop off if it does not have to travel so far.
- Increase the size of the light source. The sun is a small lightsource relative to the subject and causes hard shadows. Place the flash in an unbrella or softbox and this will allow you to create soft shadows to combat the suns hard shadows. These modifiers further reduce your flashes light output however, so you will have to up the flash power.
-Moving the subject location into an area of shade - reducing the effect of the suns ambient light in your shot.
- Erecting a "silk" or other semi-transparent screen between the sun and your subject to diffuse the sunlight and reduce its power.

Hopefully some of that helps?

What is your test for?

HAHAHA! I can't remember who changed that, it was one of the mods.

Thanks alot for this info Chris, it makes sense now. I'm doing a photography course, they usually have all the answers in the revision papers but I couldn't find this info anywhere, I even searched online and got nothing. Hopefully I can narrow it down a bit :)

Thankyou.

The only one i can think of if you are using off camera lighting with no high speed sync doohicky you are limited by the cameras max flash sync speed
(on the 40D its 1/250th of a second) a relativley slow shutter speed like that, coupled with a wide apature to make nice sexeh bokeh could lead to a blown out overexposed image in bright sunlight, but thats all i can think of, soz

Thanks for your response neal :)

@ Salma, the only limitations I can think of would be relating to distance from the subject in daylight. In strong sunlight, the flash is competing against a really powerful light source and if your subject is backlit AND quite a distance; it might struggle.

That's my thinking anyway ;)

Makes alot of sense though :) I thought I might be wrong thinking that lol.

One I can think of off hand is if you're using a multiple flashes and relying on a master/slave relationship with the built in IR triggering, the sun can overpower the sensors and tend to cause misfires. A solution would be to use a wired solution or some radio triggers. Not sure if that's what you're looking for...

That's a limitation of the camera, not the flash. My G9 has a point & shoot style shutter (as in, no physical shutter curtain) and I can sync the flash at whatever shutter speed I like but am limited to 1/250th on my Mark III.

Thanks :D

i just looked at it really closely as it was caused my using to much fluid on the on the swab could see the residue. All sorted now, clean as a whistle. I thought it might have been grease but I did think due to the location and shape it might have been residue.

phew!!! right on with the packing ;)
