Yep, but some of the light will be reflected by the white cloth and will escape out the back. To be fair, it's probably a negligable amount. But when you're only lightsource is a 430EX/II you might need all the light you can produce!!! :D

The white material is no different to the surface of a shoot through umbrella -a diffusion layer rather than a reflective one.(it is actually semi translucent when you hold it up to the light).
On your assumption that it would reflect a significant portion of the light out the back of the softbox, means that shoot through umbrellas must be just as problematic?

The reflective properties are negligible when you compare to the amount of light passing out of the front of the box.

Thinking ahead to Donna Nook.

I am considering hiring the 400mm f5.6, the received wisdom for shooting at Donna Nook is that you do not want to be lens swapping out on the sandbank ~ yes two bodies rules and I may have to break out my old 350D and slap the 24-105 on that but for the subject matter and possible need to fill the frame would hiring a fixed FL prime be too limiting???

Hmmmm???

That was a great meal ~ you must have a good set of pans :p

Yep, I can do that. But I'm on holiday for two weeks starting on Tuesday... :D

I guess it could be done that way, but of course you'll only be including the "regulars" in that list, anyone lurking who might want to attend won't be included in a PM list.

It's probably best to be in the first post of the thread, that idea's worked pretty well in the past.

And Facebook of course. :D

Uh oh, what if we run out of thread whilst you're away, you'd better leave a phone number ;)

My thoughts exactly too.

Well after just shooting with a bare flash in the garden quick and comparing it to the other night with Amy and the umbrella, the umbrella gives out sooooooo much more light!

More lens musing!

The 400mm will not fit in my bag but the 100-400 will! I think that is a 'slam dunk' if I want the 400 reach its going to be the 100-400 again.......? The thing about Donna Nook as I understand it the "walk in" to the sandbank is approx a mile and methinks the kit will need to stay in the bag on my back not with the camera slung across the body??? But would one then miss those possible snap opportunities as the whole area is photogenic

Oh well I will sleep on that decision:confused:;)

Cool, with you.

Lol. Good old student political activists. On a serious note the guy I know is playing it down but as you say from a distance they look legit and could have caused problems. Apparently it's in court early next year, he's playing down that they'll really get sent to prison but I'd not be surprised if they do myself.

We also had to endure a lot of questions on how to get the thing running too as it was a bit knackered when they bought it.

I doubt it, it is hard enough to get career burglars a custodial sentence and we have the highest number of people in prison at the moment. I am sure if he has a good solicitor he will stand a reasonable chance of being found not guitly at court.

I wonder if it's possible to have a PM Mailing List on POTN for organising meets? It would be great to have a list of all in this thread and then just mail all at the click of a button. Pete?

You can only pm 5 people at a time unless Pete knows any different

Re Donna Nook

So far I have had money from the following

Adam
Ian
Laurence
Rob

I am still playing catch-up ( only got back tonight )

Pete and Rich I believe you are both coming ( have pm'd you as well )

Neal you are a very strong possible ( have replied to you PM )

I told the organisers before I left there were five definites with four possibles and they said they would give us one free place. If this stands when I get the final tally we can either use it for the bar bill or alternatively we could always use it to hire a lens depending on everyones views.

I actually said it was a negligible amount going out the back. And yes, shoot through umbrella's do have the same problem, in fact it's worse. ;)

Welcome back :D

On what count will "they" allow one free place? Assuming that releases money my thoughts are that if a lens is hired then the possiblity exists that it would not be possible to share its use fairly bearing in mind that lens swapping would be contra-indicated on anything but the calmest of weather conditions and as I understood it we would be dispersed for most of the session period across the sandbank???

For the record I asked the hotel for a special rate and though they did not state that it was 'special' it does look lower than on the website. And I have to date told them we are 7 in number with a possibility of 8 all to be confirmed and deposit guaranteed on Monday 24th. So on the surmise that Pete & Rich are just a little delayed we should be ready to rock 'n roll. :D

So, if we have money freed up then IMO this should go on any meet extras such as lunch bits, hotel bar (bearing in mind the very early starts who will be drinking that much the night before;) ) etc and just a thought if there is a surplus maybe put that into the local seal sanctuary if there is one on the coast???

:D

They weren't specific about how many people were needed for the free place. When I book I will do my best to make sure we get it.

On second thoughts hiring a lens wasn't my best idea, using the money for covering incidentals like lunch and also petrol would be a fairer way of doing it with any spare going to a good cause.

I have decided I want a fast lens to rent for the weekend but can't make up my mind. I really like the look of a 300 2.8 but that is £144 or a 70-200 2.8 is which is a far more reasonable £70.

Finally caught-up and skim read five days worth of posts, off to bed and looking forward WHF in the morning with Rob.
