Depends. If you're used to shooting film and looking for the kind of area of view you get with a 50mm lens on a 35mm format, then forget the 50mm lenses on an APS-C sensor like the 50D and get the Sigma 30 1.4 instead.

Otherwise, the Sigma 50 1.4 is a decent lens (it always disappointed me a little), but I would not drop big money on a first prime until you're 100% sure of the focal length you want.

I agree with the Sigma 30. I got a 50mm as my first prime, and it ends up being quite long for general usage. Only found it good as a short portrait lens.

The Sigma 30 is pretty much perfect as a standard prime for your 50D. I would start there.

Since I'm shooting with primes much more often of late, I picked up a 50L a couple of weeks ago. Compared to my 50 f/1.4 and the 50 f/1.8 I used to own, there's a world of difference to me.

Second the Sigma 30mm. I had one on my old Nikon crop, my favorite lens. Especially since all the other glass I had at the time was second hand low-end crap.

I own a 50 1.2L and I bought it over the 1.4 because of the overall quality of the lens. It's rock solid. I haven't had too many focus issues. It's by far my favorite lens and of all my pictures, the ones where people always say "wow", 90% have come from this lens.

I was concerned about buying it because of some of the negative things I heard on forums, etc. But when I buy gear I think of it as a long-term investment (lenses, not bodies of course). The build and quality of the L series is the big reason I switched from Nikon. If you can afford it, get the best quality out there. If not, the 1.4 sounds like a quality lens. It was a little too "plastic-y" for me. But once you start shooting "L", it's hard to go back. (god, I sound like a bit of a sh#t there... ) ;P

Shooting with a 5D MarkII and using a Mac, in case I forgot to mention it in a post...
