Hey.

I have a 5d Mark II file that was shot portrait, that i want to print out horizontal.

The file was originally 3744x5616, and i've cropped it down to 3744x2496.

Would that be enough pixels for a decent 20x30 canvas?

Thanks

3744 / 30 = 125 dpi which seems a bit low to me...I've read of people happy with prints that size at 150 dpi but even that seems lower than recommendations that I've previously seen.

Does the print lab you intend to use have any guidelines?

With my Epson R2880 I can print down to 180ppi without being aware of any reduction in quality.

Using that as the base level would produce print 20.8 x 13.9 inches, which is close to A3+ at 13" x 19" or A2 and have some nice borders. I quite like the proportions of printing at A3+ and matting/framing to A2.

Your good on your Rez, you still have a 2:3 aspect ratio, however, how the other guy took your resolution and determined what Dot-per-pixel you should be printing at that way. I have no clue. That may give you PPI, pixels-per-inch and that certainly doesn't tell you what DPI to print it at.
Leave it to your printing service. They should be using top notch software and drivers that will get good results. 150 would do fine and remember it's all about the viewing distance anyway. Anyone going to be looking at the image at nose distance? using bicubic smoother will help if your really worried about it.

BigAlz,

Calculating the print size from pixel dimensions is simple arithmetic, divide pixels by required ppi. It has nothing to do with what the dpi the printer can produce and which I for one have no control over anyway.

I agree the ppi can be reduced a lot more if the viewing public cannot get close to the print, however I have three A2 framed prints at home and even non photographers insist on getting close to look at all of them, so I have learnt to stay at or above 180ppi.
