So I'm looking for a boom stand and have found two different possible products: The Manfrotto 420B Combi Boom and the Manfrotto 085BSL Light Boom.

The 085BSL is clearly the bigger, heavier (better) product, but I'm wondering if the 420B Combi could be a better buy for some lighter use. It would be nice if it's possible to use it on location.

Any experiences with either of them?

Hi!

The Manfrotto 420B is not made for heavy use, even though i should admitt iv abused mine in a pinch. ..

What do you consider as lighter use ?

A speedlight or a strobe with a small softbox works if you secure the base and use a counter weight, but as i said iv abused mine and used Elinchroms 1x1 SB and Photoflexs 91x122cm SB (with counterweights and sandbags of course)

The 085BSL is just a boom arm and will require a heavy duty lights stand to be of any use.

Kindest

Thanks Paul.

To begin with I would probably use a speedlite with a 60x60 Ezybox on it. Later perhaps with a Elinchrom strobe with a smaller softbox on it. If the 420B can take that (sandbagged of course), I think it would be enough :)

Saw that 085BSL Light Boom alone weight 13 lbs (6kg). Just wondering what kind of stand are you going to pair it up with?

Most of that weight is of course due to the counter weight supplied with it.

That should work without any problems, just make sure you use a proper counterweight and if you plan on use it with slightly heavier gear, use a sandbad on the base to weigh it down.

WeightBoom: 19.6 lbs (8.9kg)
Counterweight: 44.09 lbs (20kg) Maximum Load13.2 lbs (6kg) Well It is heavier than what I thought.
I was looking at the wrong specs. I was looking at the max load.
Boom alone is 8.9 kg.

The boom alone should be 2.2kg... with counter weight supplied 8.9kg... I guess the 20 kg counter weight is the maximum counter weight you can use on it? It does seem quite a bit overkill for my use though...

Looking at these, now it makes sense for me to get a heavy duty light stand instead of a c-stand and get one of this for boom.
