Hi Everyone,

I'm wrestling with the concept of flash photography at the moment, in particular fill flash. I've read several topics and articles referenced from the forum (eg. EOS flash bible and postings on what each flash mode should do) but I'm still a little confused.

The EOSFB, says that "Canon EOS cameras always default to fill flash mode in Tv, Av and M and also do fill flash in P if ambient light is high enough". This doesn't seem to be the case with my G5 (with or without the 420EX). I know the G5 isn't a proper EOS camera but I got the impression from previous posts that G-series behaved much like EOS type "A" for flash. Does this mean I need to use flash compensation under the Func menu to achieve`fill flash" effects in Av, Tv and P modes?

BTW, I found by experiment that if slow sync isn't enabled, then shutter speed won't drop below 1/60 in Av and that by selecteding "Hi" on the 420EX you can exceed the 1/250 sync speed. Also, P and Auto appear to default to 1/60 and wide open in normal circumstances but if you aim at a bright enough light source they do move off these values.

Anyway, a bit of a rambling post but I'd appreciate any further discussion and enlightenment.

Cheers, Andrew

The G6 behaves as an EOS-A camera and automatically gives fill-flash in the modes you mentioned. I would have thought the same would apply for the G5?

digidog,
Thanks for the reply. I looked through the exif info from my latest flash shots and guess what!!:
Shooting Mode: Shutter Speed Priority AE
Tv (Shutter Speed): 1/125
Av (Aperture Value): 2.2
Flash Type: External E-TTL
Flash Exposure Compensation: -1 https://photography-on-the.net/forum/images/icons/icon4.gif
Exclamation
So my question is answered. Should've looked there first I guess. We live and learn.
Andrew
