Folks,

I am about to buy a 5DmII to replace my 40D. Currently, my walk around lens is my 17 - 55 2.8 IS EF-S. It's also my usual "go-to lens".

Since I cant use this lens with the new 5DmII, I am wondering what the equivelent would be for this camera since it's FF. Might as well order it when I order the 5DmII!

Thanks!

24-70/2.8 (you'll have to live w/o the IS). Or you'll need to go with 24-105/4IS (and make up with ISO).

You can argue that the 24-105 f/4L IS is the same, if not better, on FF than the 17-55 on crop. The 5D2 better ISO makes up for the 1 stop loss. So, you'll get better FL range but you do loose the f/2.8 precision center AF.

Another vote for the 24-105/4L.

On your crop body, the 17-55 is equivalent to a 27-88, so the 24-105 on a FF is wider and longer. You give up 1 stop, but as others have said, you can make it up by upping the ISO.

Too much stuff, not enough shooting time.

Sounds like lots of love for the 24 - 105 F4 L!

Thanks, guys!

Just keep in mind that one of the weak point of the 24-105L is the sometimes ugly bokeh, specifically when the background gets a little too busy. This is very situation specific, so keep that in mind. Also, there is more distortion.

Otherwise, I love the lens. 24-105mm is a great range. It's a constant f4 and you have the 3 stop IS. It really is an extremely versatile lens.

That said, the primary reason why I chose it over the 24-70 is because I have primes covering that range. If I want speed and bokeh, I use my primes. YMMV.

The 24-105 is a fine lens. It's bokeh isn't the best, but it's cousin, the 24-70L doesn't have the nicest bokeh either. If you could live shooting with the F/4 aperture, the only drawback to this lens is that it only provides the AF system with half the light that your 17-55 F/2.8 lens does. The 40D also has a much more sensitive AF system than the 5D series, so it's almost like a double handicap in the AF department.

Wow, I thought the 40D and the 5Dm2 had comperable AF!

Definitely not. The AF on the 5D is embarrasingly slow. the shutter button lag is also horribly slow. But it isn't designed to be a sports camera.

To the 24-105 it is a great lens. but another negative that hasn't been mentioned is that it vignettes horribly wide open at 24 mm. Stop it down and/or zoom out it goes away. Just be prepared.

40D AF is improved over 30D
5DII AF is improved over 30D

5DII seems similar to 40D ... it works well for what I shoot (indoor/home) and that's all I can ask for :) AF similar to 1D serious would've been nice ...

Have to remember to not "play with a 50D" - do not want to be dissappointed if 50D has better AF.

Having owned 40D, still owning 5D Classic, and 5D II, I'd say the 5D IIs AF is the most accurate of the three.
Oh, from my little tests here and there, the 50D's AF is improved over that of the 40D too, from an accuracy POV. :D

Note: I generally use centre point AF only.

Kind regards, Wim ;)

Not to mention the fact that both the 5D and 5DMKII has extra assist points around the center AF point...
