i could use some pointers as i havent ever shot B&W before

Definitely in need of a contrast boost to bring out the shadows a bit and give the image a bit of depth.

Something like this maybe?

Another quick tip.. When shooting, try and bare in mind the rule of thirds (external link). You will achieve much more dynamic and interesting shots. Having a subject dead centre in the frame is a little ordinary.

any advice about in camera stuff to do so i dont have to post process

Your camera won't let you process your pictures in too many ways. If it's simply about contrast, that can be boosted in-camera, by adjusting your picture styles.
